BTW, don't mind if I ask where can the AD-7200/7201/7203A/S be found for sale? They seem to be especially hard to find anywhere. Thanks.

It depends on where you live. In Germany the 7200 and 7203 A/S are easy to get. Haven't seen the 7201 anywhere though.

You need to flash or dump your NEC DVD burner firmwares on your Mac, Windows, DOS or Linux machine? Just try Binflash.

Germany sounds like a cool place for hardware. Do any of the shops/sites ship internationally by any chance? Not much luck in the US too. I am actually located in Singapore, where most of the stuff seems to be rare, if any at all. I heard the AD-7201A/S is a Lite-On OEM?

No idea. Maybe you're able to check out some shops here. The page is in German though. Not sure if you can understand enough to check in detail or if there's an online translation tool that will work for you.

The 7203s seems like a rough diamond

I'd wonder how it would compare to the Pioneer DVR-215...
Any suggestions which one you'd choose?

(btw: Is it based on the same chipset?)

Both the 720x and the x15 are very good burners, honestly i can't say which one is better, that's why i'm using both (7200A & 215D).

As far as I remember (Dee should know better), the Optiarc drive has a newer chipset and the x15 still uses the same one as in the x12 drives. I guess Pioneer will use the new chipset in their x16 drives.

Liggy is right, but the 215 has another chipset, IIRC.

Thanks Liggy, I will check out the shops and see if any of them is willing to ship internationally.

That's something new. I always thought NEC/Optiarc don't make Lightscribe drives. The older AD-7191A/S appear to be based on a Lite-On DH-20A3H/L and I was assuming the AD-7201A/S will be correspondingly a Lite-On DH-20A4H/L. Let's see if anyone has a AD-7201A/S and there can be analysis of its performance.

Chipsets:
Optiarc AD-7200A/7203A uses an NEC MC-10043 (no idea about the SATA version).

Pioneer DVR-115D uses NEC MC-10041
Pioneer DVR-215 uses NEC MC-10042

As Liggy already stated. The MC-10041 chipset in the DVR-115D is the same as the DVR-112 chipset.

I would expect the DVR-116 PATA series to use an NEC MC-10043 chipset to enable 12x DVD DL burning.
