| Hi, I've checked the forums for info but I couldn't find anything to help fix my problem so I thought I'd call in some help. While I've had a few burning issues with my Optiarc (probably related to the cheap media I insist on using!) the drive has never had a problem reading discs. However I recently installed a PCI Wireless LAN card that caused some kind of hardware conflict. To cut a long story short I had to rebuild the whole PC starting with reseating all the components, etc. During this process the PC was lugged back and forth between rooms (to connect to the ISP switch) and was on it's side while reading discs, etc. I don't know if the heaving around has caused the problem but now, when I insert a disc (CD or DVD, usually a burned data/movie disc), I sometimes can't see the files with Explorer. The drive whirrs a bit and then changes name to "CD Drive" in Explorer. I can't access the disc from DOS either. This doesn't happen with many discs and with some they are intermittently picked up, suggesting a dirty lens? The strange thing is that if it's a film, for example, I can still play it using PowerDVD and it gets picked up in Nero Infotool. This suggested a software issue to me, perhaps a Windows config issue? I have tried blowing compressed air into the drive and using a lens cleaner on it (it made some dubious noises and didn't play the CD audio although I could see the files!). On the software side I have reinstalled (and checked) the ASPI layer, flashed the firmware (Liggy and Dee's) and even removed a dodgy driver (GearasprWDM.sys), all to no avail... ...help! Windows XP SP2 AMD Athlon Processor 1.10 GHz 512 MB SDRAM ...anything else I should post? |

| Never mind then! In case anyone has found this thread and is experiencing the same problems, the unit turned out to be kaput. I checked it on my mate's machine and it showed the same problems, nothing we did seemed to fix it - I wasn't interested in getting into adjusting the alignment/intensity of the lens for the sake of £20. So new burner it is! |

| Thanks for the post. No, but I did try in selective start up mode with all but Windows services switched off. The fact that my mate's machine had the same problems with it suggested to me a hardware fault. I took it back to the shop as it was only 6 months old and explained everything - they verified the behaviour on their own machine and exchanged it for another AD-5170A. They only had one left and it was silver - yeuch! (They didn't seem too bothered about me flashing the firmware strangely). If only they hadn't had any left I could have been upgraded AND got a white unit - the silver looks hideous against the white of the case though, to be honest, I'm just grateful they exchanged it. Just a wee Q while you're here - during uninstall of the GEARaspiWDM I removed some values for the "Upper Filter" in the registry - are there any potential issues that could result from this and should I replace them with other values? |

| Nope, no need. They can just get removed, then just restart and all necessary filters will be re-installed and as a bonus, mostly that will fix filter/driver issues too.
