Over at rpc1, someone flashed with the original 520i HP firmware that TDB are hosting and said they no longer had led problems that they previously had with K0P2 2510DL firmware.

    So things are looking up

The NEC firmware is one month older than the HP firmware (NEC: 2004-03-10, HP: 2004-04-12). So they probably fixed several issues since then.

I will move to the Herrie DL firmware anyway(no HP's) - currently I do not need DL, an Herrie's firmwares are always better.

Thank you, Herrie, again and again for your work!

What about the laser positioning issues that were mentioned in the "Official NEC Disclaimer?" I thought that a firmware upgrade wouldn't address that and, in turn, could cause many a coaster to be created on a 2500a?

daphatty, look at the tests - currently all DL burns on 2500@2510 was successful!
This is stuff from NEC is no more than speculation! It is bullshit, that position of laser can change something! All technology changes are expensive. Gold rule: change most of the process(make 60% new model of the drive) or do not change it at all(small changes are too expensive and gains are too small)!
They can change only quality control... But using same production line...

This is, of course, my personal opinion.

Well here is the rub. It may BURN the dual layer discs . But the compatibility of reading in other players and stand alones MAY be affected by an improperly calibrated write head. Regardless of the fact that the NEC can read the discs back. Maybe what they meant is that the discs may write fine and read back fine in an NEC2500 but compatability for reading in other drives could be low. Perhaps the NEC2510 gives better reads on other hardware because it writes slightly differently?

    Only guessing mind

Burn didn't work (power calibration error), I'll try again using the Philips 081 strategy. Afterwards I'll post it

That will be really amazing to have 4x DL in the NEC 2500a. First 4x DL drive in our hands now... Sounds unreal, but... If Herrie could do this - this will be really MAGIC!

There are no LED or tray issues with the HP based firmware.
