Need to flash NEC/Optiarc AD5540A to slave - help!

I've just purchased one of the above drives for my Toshiba Satellite Pro A120 & is doesnt show up in Windows. I'm assuming that this is because its set as a master & not as a slave. (drive has power etc)
However, is there anyway to firmware flash this drive to a slave?
I've done this before with another laptop and an NEC6500, so I know what I'm doing & have all the right kit.

Set the jumpers on the drive to Slave and ensure that you have it on the middle Ide connector on the cable. You could set the jumper to CS (cable select) and connected in to the middle connector on the cable.

Its a laptop mate. Theres no jumper on slim line drives!!!

I'm not a noob btw.. I'm a system builder but deal with desktop PCs mostly.
My own PC is an Opteron 146 running at over 3Ghz & is one of the fastest AMD PCs in the UK.

If you need a slave firmware for this drive, you should try to get in contact with NEC and ask them for such a firmware.
In theory it would be easy for me to create a slave bootcode/firmware but there's an ID that must be changed in both parts and I don't know the official values from NEC. That would make my files incompatible with the official versions.

ok, i will get in touch with NEC & see if they can help out.

Is this a common problem with NEC drives? Always set to being on Master when some laptops only work with Slave ones.
How about LG, Samsung etc - are there drives the same?

Well that was a waste of time.... just got a reply from NEC after requesting an different firmware & they replied back with a link showing diagrams on how to change jumpers on a desktop optical drive!!

I think I will return the drive & get an NEC ND6750 which are flashable.

may i ask where did you buy this AD-5540 drive from and how much? i'm looking to buy a new DVD burner for my laptop as well, but it seems the options are quite limited in the north america market, as a lot of drives are not available...

Retail availability of laptop drives is usually fairly limited as most go directly into OEM laptop accounts. It is likely to be impossible for you to source LabelFlash compatible drives in the States as HP is interfering with the importation of them there.

Pioneer has some nice slot load drives (DVR-K05 and K06)

yes, AD-5540 is a good burner, i guess; except that it doesn't burn DVD-RAM...i guess i have to buy a DVR-K06/K16 from Pioneer, but newegg.com does not currently sell them (out of stock), and other websites post ridiculous prices for these drives...

I changed this to reverse ATA using the tool found here:
http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/Optiarc-AD-5540A/

I had to connect the drive to desktop machine using an adapter in order to use program.
