| Same problems here I got NEC ND-3520A inside a Sarotech MyBox USB Enclosure and Verbatim DVD-Rs. The symptoms are exactly the same as with the other people in this thread. Tried several firmwares. Tried two PCs (an Athlon and an Intel) and a Mac (a good old blue and white G3). Result is quite sustainable. So I'm quite sure that it's: a) not an IDE issue (I use IDE-to-USB) b) not a chipset isuue (I tried three very different ones) c) not the drive hardware (the recording passes verification) d) not even the faulty driver (Os X Tiger too sees it as a blank media) Which I believe leaves us with either the recording software or the firmware to blame, and my bets are on the latter. |
| If it was a firmware issue, everyone should experience this problem and they don't.

| Not neseseraly I suppose. It might be a combination of several circumstances resulting in malfunction on a specific media at specific read speed range on a drive with some specific lazer - though if I was the unlucky one asigned at fixing this bug - I'd start with the firmware :-) All stated above is a mere newb's ho :-))) |
| The tests done by noSirHL in post #52 plus the fact that not all NEC users experience such problems as Dee-27 points out may seem to indicate a problem with individual burners, but then mark_twist in post #47 here had same problem with more than one 4550 as well as another thread where user had same issue with 3 different NEC drives. Could these users have such luck as to get that many problematic burners? The more I see on this topic, the more perplexing the problem seems to become. |
| Ok let's try an experiment. 1, All Windows users boot Windows into "safe mode without network support" (Press F8 at boot) and see if the drive can see a DVD-R disc. 2, for other OS. Force the IDE controller into PIO mode and see if the drive can see the DVD-R media.

| My problematic NEC 3520 doesn't read -R normally booting Win2k SP4 on 2 different systems, but does read -R booting to safe mode on same 2 systems. Both systems are dual boot with Win98SE, and the drive reads -R in both systems booting normally Win98SE. Note Kreten experienced same problems with 4550 for WinXP and Win2k booting normally but reads -R in DOS on several machines in Post #29, and in post #33 he states his drive reads -R in Vista and Win98SE in normal mode just as does mine in Win98SE normal mode. |
| My Optiarc 7170A Firmware 1.03 fails to read most of the DVD-R recorded by its predecessor on XP SP2. Booting in safe mode makes it read some of those disks, but not all of them. All the disks are being read successfully by IsoBuster. The more I think about it, the more it seems like an XP issue. The logical thing would be for NEC to either put a pressure on MS to issue a patch, or to issue some sort of a workaround. Problem is - I'm yet to see any indication someone on the part of the manufacturers of either SW or HW indeed investigated and determined the root cause of the problem. |
| It seems to me that some update to some Windows library or driver, or even some application is causing this problem. There were no reported cases that i can recall of this happening when the 3520 and 3540 drives were released, so i think this is something recent. This PC is triple boot, with Vista 64bit, XP (SP2) and Linux and i'm not having any problems at all. Can we assume that everyone having problems are using the default MS IDE drivers? And if they are, have they tried for example nVidia drivers and get the same result? Is there some common application that the people having problems all have installed?

And I tried it on the Mac again and it looks very similar to what I get on the PC: reads +Rs like a charm, -Rs are seen as blanks (screenshot in attachment). My guess is that problem evolves smth like this: 1) Driver queries the drive for some non-critical volume information 2) Drive's firmvare fails while reading this info, or just returns some non-standard return code 3) Driver decides that it shouldn't look any further and declares the volume blank Guessing even further DOS and Linux probably don't query the drive for this specific data at all, while Vista driver probably recognizes the error as non critical and just goes on smoothly. |

| Of the 2 problem sources suggested by Dee-27, I think some update to some Windows library or driver is the more likely culprit rather than some application because both my dual boot systems have same applications installed for Win2k and Win98SE except for a couple of programs that run only in Win2k, Spoofstick and nLite. One of these systems is Nvidia chipset mobo using Nvidia drivers while the other is Via chipset mobo using Via drivers. Is it possible to remove the Nvidia and Via IDE drivers and replace them with the default MS IDE drivers, and are there any dangers or disadvantages to doing that? This should either eliminate or identify the Nvidia/Via drivers as the cause for my case at least. My suspicion is it's not Nvidia/Via drivers because odds of 2 different drivers being a problem are remote IMO, but testing is the only way to know for sure. |

Still I suppose the IDE-to-USB is Ok - I used it with another recorder before (LiteOn) - and it was reading and writing whatever I fed to it :-))) |
| I RMAed my 4550A on this problem. NEC returned the same drive. Same serial number. I am still experiencing this problem on the returned drive!

| i have a ad-7170a and it worked fine for three months then I did a registry clean because of some adware showing up on the computer. Then the drive now only reads cds, blanks, and does not read dvds. Wierd |
| Ok folks, after reading many many thing concerning NEC DVD Drives not recognizing DVD-R media, I have the exact same problem. Mine burns to DVD-R no problem but it shows up blank. I dont get the normal, "Please insert disc" message when I explore them, there is just nothing there and it acts like it is blank media. I have done a few things to my system to no avail, but I think I might of stumbled across a fix. I do beleive it has something to do with the NVidia drivers, but I may be wrong.First thing first, I removed all virtual CD/DVD Drives from my system through the apprpriate software that installed them. I then rebooted system in safe mode with network support. I then uninstalled all the DVD/CD Drivers from Device Manager. I then let it scan for hardware changes. I then deleted these once again and rescanned. So far so good, I can read DVD Files on the drive for now. Keeping my fingers crossed that it lasts. |

Ok a quick update. This did fix the problem, but as soon as I put a CD-R disc in drive that is scratched and has difficulty reading the Disc comes up blank and guess what, all DVD-R after that also show up blank. I can reproduce this 4 times now with same results. Remove drivers from Device Manager, does not even need to be in safe mode. Say "No" to reboots till all DVD/CD Drivers are uninstalled then reboot. Once system reboots, I am able to view files on DVD again. I have inserted at least 2 dozen different DVD-R discs with different files systems and different brands of media with no problems reading them. As soon as I insert a CD that is not empty, that it has a hard time reading. That is when the fun begins. Going to test this out some more and see if I can pin point the issue some more. Hopefully someone that knows more about hardware can shed some light on this. |
| @twinkcentral Welcome to the forum. Those are interesting findings (please keep us posted on any new developments). This would suggest to me that the main problem here is at OS level and something is being flagged in the system registry.

| The twinkcentral idea it may have something to do with Nvidia drivers is likely not the case IMO since my 3520 drive has same problem with Nvidia and Via systems, and in post #29 Kreten experienced problems in several machines. More likely I think is that some update to some Windows library or driver as suggested in post #59 or something is being flagged in the system registry as suggested in post #69. |
| my nec4550a CAN read old DVD-R, but if I burn one DVD-R now it can't be read by my writer, this not happens with DVD+R that I burn now. Obvisously something happens with this kind of DVD(-R) but I install winXP again and not work, I try to uninstall DVD's units ando not work too. (sorry for my poor english!!) |

| I try this, and nero can verify ok de DVD-R, but when I extract de DVD a put it again in the NEC writer, windows show a message that it can't be read because it isn't with the correct format (other times give a message that are blank media) |

After further investingations on my particular problem. I am in agreement with you that it most likely has nothing to do with Nvidia drivers. |

Another update. As it turns out the "Scratched CD" that I mention above may in fact be a DVD-R. Still not 100% sure as I am unable to get any PC to read it (its a white faced printable disc). If anyone that knows more about media and how to tell what it is from the little tiny numbers etched into the hub, please let me know. I do believe it is a DVD though just based on the thickness of the disc. The interesting thing is that not only does this disc cause my NEC DVD Drive to stop showing any other DVD-R media contents. It also causes my other system to lock up while reading the disc upon initial insertion of the drive. That is on a Lightscribe Lite-On Drive. This requires a complete reboot of the system when it occurs as I am unable to even bring up task manager. Not sure if any of this information will help anyone but I am putting it out there just in case. Back to the NEC Drive, I am now thinking the same as Dee-27 that it is in the OS Drivers. I can uninstall the Drivers in Device Manager and all problems are gone until it has a problem reading a Disc. One other item I did notice, and what made me initially think that the disc that is scratched was a CD, is that after the Drive "Fails to read" the Icon on "My Computer" shows the drive as a CD Drive. While before the read issues begin the drive shows up as a DVD Drive. |
