Hey People

Not sure if this is the same problem as everybody else is seeing.

NEC ND3550A.. Main problem is that it show up as a cd-rom drive.
Cannot read DVD-R etc..

Clean install of XP works fine.

However, installing Daemon tools will feck this up and you will then see the problems above. Uninstall DT will do nothing to fix it (or anything else for that matter). Only working option is to reinstall XP.

So there you have it, might be the reason for some of the problems some of you are reporting.

The reinstall XP solution may be only a temporary fix as others who did it reported recurrence of the problem at random with no apparent cause. I incurred the same problem for a NEC ND3520A running Win2k and have never installed Daemon tools.

I just had a very similar problem with my NEC Optiarc 7170A running firmware 1.02

The drive was working under Windows XP for about a year, then after a clean OS install, it refused to read DVD-R discs (and only DVD-R data discs).

Unfortunately for me, all my backup files are on DVD-R data discs (of course).

Tried flashing the firmware, and it failed to update to 1.05, so I gave up. I'm not sure if its just a bad drive, or this issue is common with NEC/Optiarc drives. I've already ordered a replacement Samsung drive.

Does anyone know a good, reliable long lasting brand that doesn't have compatibility issues like this? I'd definitely spend more for a better optical drive, but I don't see many options.

Thanks, mir_6

the "DVD write now" method works great for me.

After trying all the other methods found in this thread (flashing firmware, updating drivers/windows etc) the only thing that worked was DVD Write Now.

i also had same shi7 problem with my nec 3540 and about 300 unreadable dvd-rs. after 2 weeks of looking for a solution (drivers, firmwares and 0ther stupid suggestions) ifinally found it.
to all: disassemble the device and clean the dust on the lens of the laser - this is it!!! (i dunno if the same effect may achieve with cleaning disc)
now everything is ok.

Over at xmas I installed a sony AW-Q170A bought in USA (Optiarc AD-5170A) over a friend's. All seemed working fine. I upgraded it to liggy's and dee's 1.70 (don't remember if a or b) sony original firmware.

Soon after I got a call about most discs not being read. Some problem as described here: all seems fine but DVD-R makes windows xp sp2 display a "CD-ROM" logo and either a "blank" disc or the "invalid disc - can't recognize format" error. DVD+RW and DVD+R were working, as well as CD's.

I supected windows and tried numerous things. The problem was obviously logical, as the discs could be read fine on other drives and the nero could even burn them just fine, but just not "read them" when inserted again. It would even burn isos's and verify them fine.

This person also was due a hard drive upgrade, so I installed a new one, format, fresh installed windows xp pro sp2 (off this same Sony), updated it, installed nvidia drivers (nforce4, latest), etc. Kind-of-forgot to check on the dvd on the way. Well I was done with the fresh install, indeed it was still not reading at least two brands of DVD-R.

So I went to the firmware paged and tried:
Liggy's AW-Q170A Bitsetting Firmware 1.70b
Original Optiarc AD5170A firmware 1.70b
Original Sony AW-Q170A firmware 1.70
Original Optiarc AD5170A firmware 1.11c
Liggy's AD-5170A Bitsetting Firmware 1.13
Original Optiarc AD5170S firmware 1.11

and possibly 1 or 2 more.

All of then kept failing except one, which solved the problem. Unfortuntely I don't remember which one of the last two it was the one that worked (I think it was 1.13, but not sure). I do know that I left it reporting an optiarc instead of a sony and that it was either 1.11 or 1.13 (but not the other, I tried and also failed).

So there. In case it helps someone.

I LOVE YOU MAN!!! You solved my year old problem!! it was Liggy's AD-5170A Bitsetting Firmware 1.13 that did the trick for me!! Thanks a bunch!!

This pointed me in the right direction. Flashed with Liggy's AD- 7170A bitsetting firmware 1.05 and I can now (once again) read -R disks.

My NEC burner creates DVD+RW discs that are not readable in another burner.

After quick-erasing about 200 DVD+RW media in NEC ND-3500AG burner, the media are not recognized (unreadable, unburnable) in a much newer LG DVD burner. This media used to work perfectly in that LG burner before they entered the NEC burner. Now they only work (perfectly) with that NEC burner. Installing the newest official firmware into NEC and fully erasing the media did not help. Is there a way to "completely reset" DVD+RW media?

I found this thread after my drive started acting up.

I have a Sony AW-Q170A and the problem seems to be in the Sound Card driver applications. I disabled SMAX4PNP and it seems to read disks fine.

Hopefully this would help someone else.

You can disable it using msconfig.

OK I have spent the last several hours on this Maddening problem again. I got a notification of a post to this thread so I had a look and decided to try this DVD Write Now. It did not work. But some thing interesting happened any way. I decided to search for a free substitute for ISObuster and after trying several that did not work, Dvdisaster did work. What I did not know was that it only worked because of a driver it borrowed from DVD Write Now. As soon as I uninstalled DVD Write Now Dvdisaster was unable to read the disks.

Using READ(10).
Medium "data": DVD-R, 2133181 sectors, created , Manuf.-ID: Prodis cF02.

Scanning medium for read errors.
Any way, thanks for the info on DVD Write Now. Because of it I dug up the old disks I had set aside that where unreadable without Isobuster. I found my old Lexx vidios. Once the disk is recognized by Dvdisaster, explorer and Freecommander read them like any DVD. Now how do I get the UDF driver to integrate straight into explorer without using Dvdisaster?

Hi guys, I'm new in the forum.
I have the problem with the NEC drives, 3500AG and 3550A not reading DVD-R.
I have tried most of the remedies mentioned here with no or limited result.
The work-around, installing DVD Write Now was only half a solution, as it rendered my SanDisk U3 USB-sticks useless. The U3 software is incompatible with UDF, apparently.
I found an old installation of WinXP-SP3 on an old hard disk, booted it up without internet access. The NEC drives both worked perfectly, read all kinds of media.
Next I opened the internet access, to get primarily firewall and malware scanner updated, but of course I also got the updates from MS, about 64 posts.
After the MS updates had installed, back to the trouble with the NEC drives, 3500AG and 3550A not reading DVD-R.
So, I'm pretty sure that the this phenomenon arises from one of these MS updates, but which one??

After switching to my original WinXP-SP3 hard disk, I mounted a new ASUS DRW-20B1LT, that I bought cheaply some time ago, and it has of course no problems at all.
Again a work-around which does not solve the "NEC/Optiarc DVD-R Reading Problems"

Thanks to all for sharing their information

I read this thread pages 1-3 and my drive OPTIARC is now reading DVD's. In BIOS motherboard, change the option DMA MODE from AUTO to the mode MWDMA-2 (or test one by one and test.)

Is it help?
