Is it a true NEC chipset or a LiteOn mediatek chip? I like the NEC version myself.

I'm still hoping for the NEC chipset. I would buy this drive anyway but it's not yet available in the store where I want to order. Actually it doesn't seem to be available in Europe at all.

Looking at the bezel (assuming this is an actual picture of the drive, mind you), my best guess is this is a LiteOn rebadge. I was hoping for NEC chipset, too. Note the position of the tray release hole on the front is not consistent with true NEC drives.

I noticed that too already. But I still haven't given up hope. In their press release they mention the AD-7200 as being the predecessor series.

The front bezel looks to me like real NEC. Genuine NEC bezels have drawer and bottom of bezel the same size, which is what is shown on the picture. Liteon rebadges have drawer bezels wider than the bezel bottom. Anyway, I just ordered it so I will open it as soon as I get it.

Looking at the way the bezel clips on, I don't think it is an NEC -- also the back of the drive is beige colored like LiteOn drives.

I guess it's slightly possible that LiteOn is using NEC's chipset for their 24x drives. That would be odd because I wouldn't think that would work with their SmartBurn routines for MediaTek.

I have recently heard information that it will be Mediatek on the LiteOn drives. And the original source should really know it.

Did I already mention that I am impatient?

However opening the drive and voiding the warranty shouldn't be necessary to find out whether it's Mediatek or NEC chipset. Tools like CD Speed and Binflash should already be able to give an indication on what's inside.

How would they know if you opened the drive? There are no stickers of any kind. As long as somebody is careful and does not destroy screws, there is no way to tell. I have opened drives before and sent them for warranty repair and never had a problem.

I will open mine when I get it and take pictures.

Well i only care if the drive can produce good quality burns, and if it happens to have a nec chip it would be great, but burn quality is the only thing that i don't want to compromise.

to be honest i think than only mcc and ty will be able to get burned faster than 20x, but if this drive can give some good results (at lower speeds) i will be getting one for my collection.
