| Hello guys, I'm new here and I've registered in this forum to find help. If I can Maybe you'll say here comes another lamer, but I've read a lot here and in other forums and I can assure you I couldn't find a solution to my problem. The wind brought me here seeking answer why my NEC ND-4551A refuses to read burned DVDs. Actually at the beginning it refused to read anything but after several days of trying this and that, I figured out that in the BIOS I should set the JMB363 to AHCI mode, I don't know what AHCI has to do with PATA, but anyway I tried BASIC and RAID mode, and whatever you can imagine. Everything started when my good old ASUS P4PE died a few months ago and I got myself ASUS P5B-VM with that JMB363 controller both my HDD and the NEC are conneted to the only PATA chanel. The thing is that the NEC drive burns everything perfectly (I mean CDR, CDRW, DVD+R DVD+RW DL dvds etc) the thing is that it refuses to read burned dvds, even, which can be read without problem on another computer. I mean that it reads DVD but only stamped ones.By the way my 4551 connected to another computer reads perfectly what you put in it, so definately the problem is not the drive itself. And with my old mobo in the same case (PSU) everything was fine. I've tried with every firmware (original or modified) and every BIOS version (by the way the last is a beta from yesterday) available.... Changed 10 cables with 80 or 40 wires.... And let me point out that I've re-installed windows XP Pro something like 10 times and a few times VISTA Ultimate. Once using the JMB drivers, the next time using the windows default driver and etc. and so on and so on... I thing it has to be a hardware problem, because even before windows startup I cannot boot from a burned copy of Vista, but I can install XP... Any help will be apreciated! Thanks! I know that finally I'll get a SATA HDD and DVD-RW but it's more like a challenge what I have here.... Maybe useful my configuration details: Antec 1080 AMG plus case with 430W PSU MB ASUS P5B-VM BIOS 1001 beta 2x1Gb Kingston DDR2 at 667Mhz 80Gb DiamondMax Plus D740X _NEC DVD_RW ND-4551A priginal rev. 1.09 |

| Does it fail to read all burned DVDs or -R only? NEC drive failure to read -R is a pretty common problem, and you may find more details on this at http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=209168. |
| Actually 99% of the DVDs I've tried are DVD+R with software pictures etc. In general everything bured on whatever DVD media is unreadable, no matter data, dvd video... |
| Burn 1 again, this time with verify enabled. If it run through without errors, then your OS drivers might be crapped. Uninstall them in devicemanager, then restart.

As I mentioned above I cannot boot from a VISTA burned DVD... This has nothing to do with OS drivers as far as I know... I'm doomed. |
| Laser pick-up module has two (at least) lasers one for reading, another for burning. Seems like the one for reading is dead. |

Guys! Believe me this is my worst nightmare. I'm begging you to come with something creative here... Soething I forgot to try... |
| Updated the mobo BIOS? Were this drive crossflashed? Get a new burner.

| I've tried all BIOS versions available, including the beta from last week as I've already said... The drive is not crossflashed and I can easily throw it away, but the drive itselfis not the problem. It's that J-micron controler, but there has to be a way to solve this... By the way maybe two months ago I tried another burner, I took it from a friend of mine, and plugged into my PC it acts just like mine thanks anyway |
| Maybe search for "Jmicron" in this forum.
