NEC ND-2500A 1.07 Firmware Question

I have an OEM version of the drive from Newegg that I just got. I'm pretty new to burning, but am not new to computing/PCs. The drive burns fine with 1.06, but I noticed the 1.07 version from NEC. The readme states:
"this Update works only with NEC ND-2500A (retail&bulk), not with OEM releases. (OEM means part of a full PC package or external USB/FireWire variant of this burner) For OEM products contact your dealer, distributior or manufacturer of PC package."

Is this true, should I not upgrade the firmware to NEC 1.07???

I've also read about Herrie's firmware...any suggestions on what version to use? I only want my drive to write at the speeds it's capable of, and to be compatible with media...I'm not looking for anything fancy at this point like DL, etc.

well I purchased an OEM drive from newegg.com and loaded the 1.07 drivers and it worked fine. I didn't read the readme ::gasp:: I'm now using herries older 1.07 firmware and everything runs great, I'm burning Ritek 4x DVD+R's at 8x. I'm going to try his new firmware tonight.

I've been using Herrie's 1.07V2B4 firmware and it works like a champ

BTW, my NEC2500A was also bought from NewEgg (OEM)

Most people mention where they bought the drive, is it because which firmware it comes with important? If someone buys Pacific Digital rebagged 2500a, would not be the same, can't same modifications be applied to PD drives? I bought mine from Newegg too but I am just curious.

Most people got it from Newegg because of excellent service and dropped price.
The Pacific Digital is no longer attractive because of Crap OfficeMax Service and Rebates.
I believe the drives are the same whether it is PD or OEM.
And you should be able to flash either one with OEM or modified firmware.

They are the identical.

I bought my drive under the 'Pacific Digital' brand.
