It's not completely clear from Herrie's post, but what he has managed to do is use different strategies at different speeds. This is something of a breakthrough in firmware modding, Herrie deserves a big round of applause for figuring this out, I'm sure it took some work.

So this FW should offer a couple advantages over the 1.08b3 that's circulating now. Nice work. I hope NEC doesn't decide to offer Herrie a job, then we'd lose him!

Interesting. Thanks for pointing out this thread to me, rdgrimes. Herrie, so this is a strat splice where 2x/4x is taken from one media code and 6x/8x is from another? Hmm. Perhaps we could try something similar for the Liteys when I finally get enough free time to poke around with strats.

I just got my nec2500 on Thursday. Had a few problems with the stock fw. I think that it was a bad batch of discs that I got free from newegg. But I'm using 107b9 now and it works great. Can't wait to try this one. Herrie you are the best. Thanks alot. Love the bitsetting features also.

Same here: Bulkpaq Printables (ProDisc S03) work fine @8x. With the unmodified HP 1.27 firmware, EVERY disc was a coaster! Herrie, you are the best. Thanks a lot!

Any FW based on the HP1.27 will continue to have some issues with 4x burning of RW media, but much improved over earlier HP versions. Your best option is to burn them at 2.4x only to avoid the issues completely. Or scan every RW burn to confirm it's a good one.

i had some old bulkpaq prodisc R02 printable disks. 100% coaster rate. i still have about 10 of these left. i will see if these disks can be written with this new firmware.

if it does, for what its worth, i will donate £10 to herrie.

[edit] i just tried out burning 2 of these disks. 1 burnt@6x, 1 burnt@4x => both coasters.

Yeah for sure! I managed to get 1 to work, but only because i only burnt about 2gigs to it. That was going to be my long term solution. If it works for you i'll give it a go too........

Great job Herrie!
I've been testing the "prerelease" version of this firmware for quite some time and it has been working excellently.

They burn at 8x here:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RICOHJPN-R00-001]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc Type : [DVD+R]
Manufacturer ID : [RICOHJPN]
Media Type ID : [R00]
Product Revision : [001]
Disc Application Code : [General Purpose]
Recording Speeds : [2.4x]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4,482.6 MB = 4.38 GB]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Results are not quite as good in the 4x range as they are with 1.08b3, but still very acceptable for 2.4x media. 6x and 8s strats are awesome!
