ND-3500 burn speed and quality tests

I thought it would be good to have a thread for speed and quality tests. Suggest posting only tests results here, and keep discussions to other threads.

I'll start, with TY T02 burned at 16x, FW 2.16. As you can see, the drive slows late in the burn to about 13x CAV burn speed. This has been reported by several othere also, and appears to reflect a conservative OPC scheme. Once again, NEC chooses to err on the side of quality. Total burn time is not greatly affected.

Edit by Wesociety: Thanks rdgrimes!
To all others, I have split the "discussion" for these scans into a seperate thread here: DISCUSSION.
Please use the seperate thread for discussion and only post scans here! Thanks!

Now for burn quality. As you can see, the results of the "almost 16x" burn are quite good. Certainly as good as anything else we have seen at these speeds thus far.

I think I'm gonna love this drive.

Here's the same burned disc, reading in the 3500:

TY T01/01 burned at 8x, FW 2.16

Nothing new here, same familiar Z-CLV burns at 8x;

As for burn quality, it doesn't get much better than this. I sure wish someone would bump the burn speed for T01/01. (hint Herrie)

TY G02 burned at 12x, FW 2.16

12x Z-CLV is a bit odd, but you can't argue much with the results.

CMC E01 burned at 8x, FW 2.16

Nice to see that NEC is still fond of CMC.

Re: ND-3500 burn speed and quality tests

I just got my 3500AG in the mail today but I don't have any fancy media to test except some Ritek G04s and Verbatim 4X DVD-R (MCC01R). The Ritek was burned at 4X while the Verbatim was capable of 8X burns. So far I'm very satisfied with this dvdrw and am looking forward to the SL bitsetting f/w that's coming out. Everything about this drive is great, it's even a better/faster reader than the NEC ND-2500A and the LiteOn 166s DVD-ROM drive.

CMC AE1 (8x -R) burned at 8x, FW 2.16

This is interesting. Apparently the OPC did not like this media and slowed it to 4x without ever reaching 8x. Results are good as usual.

DVD+RW burned at 4x, FW 2.16

Here's a selection of common +RW 4x media. Of course, they all burn at 4x CLV;

Looks like the Verbatim is a good one to avoid.

CDR's rated at 48x

This drive is rated for 48x CDR speeds, but NEC is taking a pretty conservative approach to what speeds it allows with vaiaous media. Looks like Ritek 48x is the best choice for this drive. Most media will be firmware limited to 32x. I've heard that MCC 48x media will also burn at 48x on this drive, but I don't have any here to test.

I also noted that the drive is using running OPC checks to adjust the burn strategy.

TY 48x burned at 32x:

Ritek 48x burned at 48x:

CMC 48x burned at 32x:

Re: ND-3500 burn speed and quality tests

Ricoh brand RICOHJPNR01. Burn speed 8x. Very nice! But a little slower at burning then I am used to.

Hmmm, I wonder where they set those shift points...
