MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for NEC DVD-Writers

NEC / Optiarc Writer Discuss, MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for NEC DVD-Writers at CD and DVD Writers forum; MCSE 1.0.7.7 has a silent support for the NEC 3550 drive, which has been tested successfully in the mean time. I am looking for testers with a 3530 or 7550 drive. __________________ LiteOn/Benq/LG/NEC/Pioneer/Samsung/Toshiba stuff: MediaCodeSpeedEdit V 1.2.0.5, released November 17th 2009

@Ala42, when opening the 1-07 4551 firmware in the latest 1.0.7.7 version there is DVD-RAM strategy. But when opening the 1-84 4551 firmware there is NO DVD-RAM strategy.
Is this due to the firmware or maybe a fault in your tool?

This is due to the firmware. The 1.84 firmware on your site differs from the one I have, and it also differs in the DVD-RAM table. Both have version 1.11, but the three MXL codes I search for changed a bit, so they are not found anymore. I will add some additional search expressions, so that the table is found again.

After checking the garbage displayed in the -RW table I am sure the file on your site is corrupted.

I have an NEC-ND2510A and I'm using "Dee's modified 205C firmware." I recently picked up some new media which happen to be RITEKF1 which aren't supported by this drive. In fact, I can't even start a burn with them.

I've tried various writing strategies with this tool, including all of the 8x RITEK strategies included in the aforementioned firmware. I've also tried "MCC 02RG20" (which didn't work very well at all).

The best of the strategies was "RITEKG05" which is okay. A little "wobbley" towards the end of the disc but not TOO bad.

I was wondering if anybody who has more experience than I with this might have some suggestions on other strategies which are likely to work that I can try without burning through TOO many of my discs. ;-)

Thanks

Does Media Code Speed Edit support the ND-3550A ??? I did see that the author posted that it is supported "silently" ... whatever that means. I don't want to mess with the f/w if the author doesn't fully support and write code for it. In other words, I don't want to be a guinea pig. I want proven firmware. I've had my fair share of headaches with two Lite-On 1635S's that I returned to Newegg and replaced with this NEC drive, so I am not in the mood for "testing", at least for now anyway.

And if it's not supported, is there a way I can flash this drive with a proven f/w that "tweaks" this drives performance (ex. disabling riplock, etc.). I trust the mods and members of this site, like no other !! So If I get a recommendation, I'll go with it.

Thanks for your reply ... this site is THE best as far as CD/DVD burners are concerned. Thanks to Liggy for the proggy !!! Long time reader, first time poster !!!

If you were really a long time reader you should know that I am NOT the author of MCSE. All the credits belong to Ala42 here.

Silent support means: Supported in the released version, but not officially anounced at release time. In this case it was not announced because the test feedback did not return in time.

Tested successfully means a test drive survived flashing with a modified firmware and all modifications behaved as expected.

This MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool is fantastic thing!
My question: Is there any support for changing speeds of ordinary cd's and cd-rw's (not only dvd's) in firmware?

For example when I burn with my nec nd-3550a 12X cd-rw disc it allowed me only to burn at 10X not 12X, or when I want to burn some 52X cd's i am only allowed to burn on 24X.

Sorry about my bad english.

It's not wise to overspeed any kind of RW disc, they're simply not suited for it. And you can assume that NEC takes the highest possible speed for CD-R discs. If it burns 24x, I should stick to it to avoid misburns. Only a few pretty obscure disc brands will be unrecognized and are burned at a lower speed than they could manage. But I wouldn't risc my data. On the other hand, the drive will burn some 24x discs at 48x painless. Just take into account that NEC has tested most discs and determined the optimal speed.

Yes, that's the only truth as we know it.

No, what I mean is that my nec burn EVERY 12X cd-rw disc only at 10X-no other speeds available!

It is hardly unlikely that EVERY 12X cd-rw I try can not be burned at 12X speed?!

So my question is can this be somehow corrected?

IIRC 12x write speed was never certified on CD-RW, only 10x, 24x, 32x.

Maybe, but just as an idea I think is not bad to have some speed hacks also for non dvd media like we have for dvd media

I understand what you're meaning, but I still think it can't be done. Ala42 gives the answer: 12x speed is not certified. That means that you can leave the max. at 10x or increase all CD-RW media to 12x, including all 10x media, simply because the firmware doesn't distinguish between both kinds of media. And even the slight speed increase from 10x to 12x will give unreliable burn results and eventually destroy the media.

CD-RW discs should be burned at the speed they were designed to be written at, so the drive will limit you to what speeds it will burn at.

NEC drives (and other drives too) have been optimized for burning CD-RW at their maximum certified speed, so there's really no need for burning the discs any slower. Don't assume that burning the discs slower would result in better burning quality or compatibility.

If you for some reason really really need to burn the discs slower than certified speed, then your best bet is a dedicated CD burner.

Standard Speed CD-RW is designed for 2-4x burning
High-Speed CD-RW - // - 8-12x burning
Ultra Speed CD-RW - // - 16-24x burning
Ultra Speed+ CD-RW - // - 16-32x burning

Ultra Speed(+) CD-RW discs can be burned slower on some drives, e.g. on my Matshita UJ-840S DVD-RAM notebook drive.

Don't even try to do that with RW media!

I think the Ritek008 is a genuine 8x RW disc, so it's not a matter of overspeeding but just of adding an unrecognized MID. Maybe Dee can solve this, because she knows how to edit the parameters of a MID.

Okidoki, I've flashed my drive back to the unmodded TG now. Thanks for the info.

About being a genuine 8x +RW disc: My Benq 1640 only wants to burn these discs at 8x, my Samsung 162C can burn 'em at 4x, 6x and 8x

I have no problems with NEC 4551 and Pio 110 to burn them also lower than 8x if necessary...
