Quote:Originally Posted by LiggyI've extended my current test firmware to enable 8x for RITEKR03-002. Now I just need to know where to send it. The following changes are implemented at the moment. KProbe scans are of course highly appreciated
RITEKG04 uses strategy from RITEKG05 (Had to move OPTODISCK005 to RITEKG04's place)
RITEKG05 uses strategy from TTH01
SONY04D1 uses strategy from MCC 02RG20
FUJIFILM03 uses TTH01 (I wouldn't use more than 12x on this one)
RICOHJPNR00-001 uses strategies from RICOHJPNR01
RITEK R01 and RITEK R03 use 2.4x from RITEK R01, 4x from RITEK R02, 6x and 8x from TDK 003
RICOHJPNR01-002 uses strategies from RICOHJPNR02
PRODISCS03 moved to TDK 003 (had to move NANYA DR to this position)
First test was a ProdiscR03 burned at 12X (DVD-Video file 3.8 gig)
The disc plays on PC and set top DVD player but freezes on the final chapter.
One should remember these are early days for media speed ups on the ND-3500AG, and write strategys will need tuning i think, be prepared for some coasters if you intend to try out this firmware. And above all, remember this is TEST firmware.

This time a Ritek G05 burned at 16X
burning this media at 16X was asking to much i think, but i thought i would try it .
As you can see from the scan, the disc is a coaster

Ritek G04 (Ridisc printable branded) burned at 8X
A better result, the G05 write strategy used seems a good match, there are quite a few PI/PIF errors nearing the end of the burn but that is to be expected on this media asked to burn at twice it's rated speed. The disc is very readable though
A pretty good result me thinks
EDIT : I may try this one at 6X later

FujiFilm03 Burned at 12X (DVD-Video)
I didn't expect much from this media as the batch i have hasn't been great with the stock firmware. Another coaster

Ritek G04 (Ridisc printable branded) once more, this time at 6X
DVD Video 3.8 gig. A superb burn by any standard and a very useful speedup, taking 4 to 5 minutes off the burn time for this media
I will have no hesitation in burning this media at 6X
A big thankyou to Liggy for making this possible.

Revision 2 TEST firmware changed strats for ProdiscR03 using R04 strategy.
ProdiscR03 (DVD Video) burned at 12X, a big improvement over Revision 1 firmware. Just doesn't quite retain quality at the end of the burn.
NOTE this is a NEW tub of Prodisc. perhaps not as good as my first tub, i'll need to do an 8X burn to test

I tested the Liggy test firmware tweaked to enable 8x writing on Ritek G03 and the burn came out ok; unfortunately I don't have the possibility to check the errors but the read-line in NEC3500 is straight until the 4.3G when it goes down with an error. However the disc is read completely by the Pioneer a07 writer.
So for the moment I think it's a good strategy if the discs are not filled over 4.3G.
Good work Liggy! Thank you!
Second disc worked out flawlessly but NEC reduced it's burning speed in the end (over 4G) at 4x! Quite a nice move, total time being increased by 20s but the disc is perfectly readable at 16x.__________________

Thanks. I saw Dee-27 already posted a similar graph so I edited my posting and removed the screenshot.Quote:Originally Posted by vicvonIt appears to be the 13x CAV .__________________

Revision 2 firmware this time with a revised strategy for Fujifilm03 using MXL RG03 write strategy.
A fairly high PI/PIF error count compared to what we are used to on the ND-3500AG but this disc plays flawlessly on my set top player
A success for this media

Hi Dee-27. Saw your result. As you said the PI/PIF error count are higher than usual - a little too high for my taste. Maybe there's an even better replacement strategy for this media? Can't be that many leftQuote:Originally Posted by Dee-27Look at the latest result with revised write strategy

I have to leave the strategy tweaking to Liggy
I wouldn't know where to start

It's a little annoying - the burn at 8x takes almost 10 min while at 12x under 7 min, hence the need for more 12x strategies or for a revolutionary change in speed step changes. The drive should start at 6x and reach 8x below 1G point. That's the strategy of most drives nowadays. It has no harm on quality because 8x speed should be accepted by most media these days not only in the outer 50% but throughout entire disc (except 15% in the beginning I suppose). Do you think such change so deep in the firmware can be made by non-NEC specialists? Liggy? Am I too optimist? __________________

At least I don't know where to start. Maybe someone is able to change this, but I have my doubts.Quote:Originally Posted by CorbusIt has no harm on quality because 8x speed should be accepted by most media these days not only in the outer 50% but throughout entire disc (except 15% in the beginning I suppose). Revision 2 firmware Ritek G05 burned at 12X with MXL RG03 write strategy.
Although this burn has produced a very high PI/PIF scan, its still a vast improvement over the first G05 12X burn, the disc plays without fault in my set top box.
Last test of the day, my hubby is getting annoyed that i'm spending so much time at PC
Thanks again to Liggy for his excellent work on ND-3500AG firmware
