Burner: NEC Optiarc AD-7170A, FW: 1.O3
Media : Verbatim DVD+R DL (MKM 003) 8.0x @ 8.0x

I couldn't believe how well this burned, just wish I could find them cheaper than $28 for a 15-pack. (sale @ BestBuy)

My Optiarc 7170A burns slow as hell (x1.6). I flashed 7170 with LD1.O3RPC1, media is TTH2 TDK 16X DVD-R, burning software is ImgBurn 2.1.0.0, O/S is XP SP2. This drive is on CS, first device on the same IDE cable; another device is NEC3500 2.TG. Would it be a media issue?

Alright, after I disconnected 3500 from the same IDR cable, burn speed returns to normal (10X-15X), however the verify speed goes down to hell and fails. I have tried 2 batches of TDK DVD-R 16X, one is TTH2, the other is CMC MAG AM3.

Things to get out of the way:
1. Be sure you have a 80-conductors IDE cable
2. Check DMA settings (see my signature).
Good luck

1. The cable is blue-gray-black.
2. UDMA 4 when 7170A was connected.

So, the Sony AW-Q170A is identical to this Optiarc drive. Is the Dee "AW-Q170A 1.S2" firmware identical to this 1.O3 version? The strategies & dates on the main firmware page appear to be the same... Would it hurt anything (other than the warranty) to crossflash the Sony with the Optiarc firmware, or are they the same thing just with different drive names in device manager?

I'm going to be annoyed if the Sony doesn't support C2 & non-caching (for EAC audio rips). I primarily will use this drive for ripping with the occasional DVD burn thrown in... Going to replace a dying NEC ND-2500.

Oh, and ignore my post count, I'm not the average n00b.

So is it safe to say, that no one uses the 7170 as a scanner?

I'm waiting for some scans, to see some kind of improvement in the burn, so when the time will come, i'll have a reason to go to this new f/w for my 7173.

wow Dee , you are amazing ! I have a ad-7170a . My cdspeed scores where high. One of a sony branded 8x yudens gave me like 500 PIE errors and hundreds of PIF'S. I updated to 1.04 and the PIE's are in the teens and the PIF is like 6. I just wanted to say thanks

I tried to find any mention of the SATA version of this drive in regards to updating the firmware, but no luck. Will this fw also work on the A7170S?
And yes, my newb post count is telling...

No, you cannot mix SATA and PATA firmwares.
