Yes. Enough so that you get the same good write quality out of them.

- for CD-RW?
- for DVD+R?
- for DVD+RW?

- for CD-RW & DVD-RW, depends from the media.
- for DVD+R 4x i think.

Just to add my 2 cents, based on experience with 7200S and 7203A. These seem to be quite good CD-writers with TY media. Compared to my reference CD recorder (LG GSA-4167B) the average C1 errors are some 10-15% higher, but still an excellent result. No C2's ofcourse. Useful as CD scanners as well. From what I could gather here it looks like the 72xx series drives report C1=BLER and results are comparable to what Nexperia-based BenQ drives report on CDs.
Since I don't have any BenQ drives it would be nice if somebody can do in-depht comarison between the BenQ 16xx and NEC 72xx drives in terms of CD quality scenning.

An Optiarc AD-7200A arrived on my doorstep today, so here are scans of a CD on the Optiarc and a Benq DW1655. The CD was written on the Optiarc at 32x. The CD is from a rather poor batch of Datasafe Taiyo Yuden discs so don't blame the drive.

And finally an Imation branded Moser Baer CD-R disc written on an Optiarc AD-7200A at 32x.

I think I should stop now as I don't want to hijack Dee's thread (sorry). There is a thread for Optiarc AD-720x scans and discussion here

New source for the AD-7200A, the Sony DRU-V204A:

http://www.staples.com/office/suppli...0051&langId=-1

I'm almost 100% sure it's a rebadged AD-7200A (unless they've come out with some previously unknown AD-7204A model).

I guess it's just a typo and this drive is a DRU-V200A=AD-7200A

Searching Google, the only result for "DRU-V204A" is here on CD Freaks.

No, not a typo. That is the model number, and it is a genuine AD-7200A. I bought three of them for $19.99 at Staples today. Came with Nero Essentials 8.

Will confirm by grabbing the firmware with BinFlash and sending it to you later.

It's confirmed! The Sony DRU-V204A is a retail Optiarc AD-7200A:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/2173508-post46.html

Crossflashing of AD-7200A firmware on a DRU-V204A works.

Another retail drive has just shown up on NewEgg, the Sony DRU-V202A:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827131058

The specs also look the same as the AD-7200A.

We also have the DRU-V200A and the DRU-842A, both of which also seem to be AD-7200A based drives.

I don't know what the heck is going on over there at Sony. They're trying to become the Procter & Gamble of optical drives (many brands, but the same company).

I notice in the nero info screen shot that it shows cdg under the read feature but it has 3 x's under the write features. On the samsung 223f ithas the same screen shot with nero info tool but it shows no x's under the last 3 lines under the write features. I would like to know why nero shows it on one and not other. My concern is will the sony nec burn cdg?

as far as i can tell till now only the TSST (Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology) Drives supports the CD+G format

Optiarcs and lite-on 's don't support this feature

But from the screen shots under read the +g is ticked off on bothe of them. So if nothing is ticked off on the write features I guess it means it does read.

Hi Dee-27, would your modified firmware for the Optiarc AD-7200A be compatible with the Pioneer DVR-116D since they both are based on the NEC MC-10043B chip?

No.

There is much more to a drive than the chipset.
