Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

NEC / Optiarc Writer Discuss, Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper at CD and DVD Writers forum; Probably a bug, but it would need to many changes to make it work without the correct burner, so you'll have to be patient until I'm back home again.

Bug fixed. Version 0.94b is uploaded and should work fine again. That was my fault again.

Just tried it with beta4 - supplied file doesn`t contain a valid firmware. Is it me or is it a bug?

It must be you then. I just dumped a firmware and started the flash routine afterwards. Although I didn't really flash the drive (using debug mode), the file was accepted.

I dumped my original firmware with it then flashed it back, no problem but when I try to flash the beta4 file it says it doesn`t contain a valid firmware.

Very frustrating. Still get the same message. Thanks for your help, I may have to give up on this.

I've waded all the way through this thread but I can't see any mention of this so here goes:

Are you aware that there is already a long-established, well-respected flash tool called UNIFLASH? This is a freeware DOS-based BIOS flash tool first developed in 1998 and designed to supplement/replace AMD and American Magatrends flashers. The current author/developer is Rainbow and the homesite is here:

http://www.uniflash.org/

While not very likely, it does occur to me that some n00b using a search engine might use the wrong "Uniflash" and end up frying their BIOS! Maybe you might like to liaise with Rainbow to sort out the name problem.

Thanks Liggy and sorry for being such a dope. I did not have WinRar installed and it did not cross my mind that the file could be compressed.
All working now.

Oh. I didn't know that.
I guess it's impossible to mess up any devices since I don't access the PC's flash ROM, but maybe I should think about a name change, although it gets harder and harder to find good names that are still unused.

I don't have WinRAR installed either, but I know what it means if a filename ends with .rar - and I know how to uncompress them on the commandline.

Liggy, why not to name your perfect flasher DVDRWflash or if you plan to support DVD-ROM drives in the future, simply DVDflash. While when you search google DVDflash found on a lot of websites, DVDRWflash search found nothing.

Another idea - FWflasher - google found nothing on this search.

And finaly a perfect name would be LiggyFlasher!

Just to be on the safe side:
Is SCSI emulation required for necflash[0.93] to work (on Linux)?
necflash -scan provided me with this:
Quote:
Uniflash - NEC version - (C) by Herrie and Liggy
Visit http://uniflash.cdfreaks.com - http://www.herrie.org

List of supported devices:

Device : /dev/hda
Vendor : _NEC
Model : DVD_RW ND-3500AG
Firmware : 2.16

Device : /dev/sg0
Vendor : _NEC
Model : DVD_RW ND-3500AG
Firmware : 2.16
(/dev/sg0 is just a symlink to fool cdrecord/dvdrecord)

Currently I don't have SCSI emulation enabled [Linux 2.6.7]. Should I go ahead and flash?
Any help/advice is welcome ; )

As far as I know, SCSI emulation is no longer needed for most applications with kernel 2.6. Usually -scan should already do enough checks, but to be sure just use the -dump function and compare the created file with an existing binfile if you have one available.

or how about ND-Flash?

I don't want to use my name for it.
Maybe burnflash is fine as well. At least it's shorter than burnerflash and Google doesn't show many hits for this name too. I'd like to implement the notebook drives 5100(5500) and 6100(6500), but unfortunately I don't have enough information for these drives although 5100/5500 may already be working if the commands for this drives are the same that I have to use for the 1100/1300.

BTW: I'm currently working on a new feature. So stay tuned.

ND Flash is not a good idea since I want to implement more drives than just the NEC ones. I need a name that's superordinated for all the flashers that partly have the same codebase.

LiggyFlasher is also a bad idea since Herrie and r-man helped a lot making everything possible.
How about freaksflash?
