Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

I have been using NecWinFlah and necflash for several years with no problems whatsoever. A few months ago I bought a Dell XPS 420 which came with a DVD/RW pre-installed. This shows up as PBDS DVD+-RW DH-16W1S which I believe is some sort of Philips/Benq hybrid.

Anyway I have added a new Optiarc 7201S and wanted to flash it to the latest Liggy & Dee firmware so I downloaded the latest 1.45 version of the wingui program.

The program starts but no GUI appears. I can see the program in the Task Manager but I cannot kill it. Reboot is the only option.

I then tried the command line version - I ran necflash -scan

The details of the Optiarc drive get displayed then the program hangs solid too.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

the problem is Vista. I refuse to buy ANY Dell equipment since they will void your warrantee if you remove Vista but yet MANY program simply do not run under Vista. I only buy equipment that I can run 2000/XP/2003 on as well as Vista. It's only been two machine so far this year that they've lost sales to. Vista is a disaster. I've heard from no one who likes it and personally know a few dozen who hate it. Office 2007 is pretty much hated too. Everyone complain it's impossible to get even simple operations done. Even saving a files is a pain in the ass. They've taken away all the menus and shortcuts EVERYONE USES.

It can't handle the Optiarc AD-7560A either. I suspect it fails on all laptop drives.

The machine has Windows XP Pro SP3 on it They cannot possibly void the warranty if you change the software. There is even a page on the Dell Community forum which tells you how to do it.

The AD-7560A is an OEM drive from QSI which uses completely different commands and that's why it is not supported. Several NEC and Optiarc slimline drives are supported by Binflash though, just check the list of supported drives.

Do you have any thoughts why both necflash and necwinflash hang on my machine. I am more than happy to run any diagnostics version if you have one.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

Since Necwinflash and Necflash are mostly using the same code, it's logical that if one program has a problem, the other one has too. But I can only guess about the reasons.

While scanning for drives I send a command to the drive that's required for (more or less safely) identifying the exact drivetype. One of your other drives probably interprets this command in a different way and expecting different data for input or output. Unfortunately this locks up the IDE channel and I have not found a way to fix this behaviour yet. When scanning for drives, you could add one or two "-v" options to get some more details what Binflash is doing.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

Liggy, thanks for the explanation. I ran necflash with two -v options as suggested. Looking at the output it seems to identify the other device and mark it as unsupported. It also finds my virtual DVD drive and flags that as unsupported. It hangs when it tries to do something against the E drive - which is the letter allocated to the non-Optiarc drive

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

Does your E: drive correspond to the "PBDS DVD+-RW DH-16W1S 2D14". If so, you might try to temporarily remove the assignment of drive E: to a device in your computer management (not sure about the correct terms in an English Windows installation)

I still have no idea why there is no problem when scanning the devices with ASPI. A different solution might then be running Binflash as a user who does NOT have administrative privileges.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

I flashed my NEC 3550a original firmware to Maddog 1.f3.

Is there anyway I can go back to the NEC firmware designed for this drive?

Now when I use any firmware flashing tool from NEC, it says my drive does not match the firmware I want to install and I can go no further.

A link to a topic that has answered this would be great.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

Just use Binflash again for flashing the firmware. And yes, Binflash will also accept the flasher executable file.

@ Liggy
whenever flashing my drive with necflash or necwinflash 7200A on external initio 1430L 4.73 1394 enclosure everything goes great but necwinflash does not give correct command for booktype to +RW & +R but does to +R DL but using Necflash all goes ok. Necwinflash says using command 0 for booktype and on my internals it says command 4 always also cd speed says com. 4 on internals and command 0 on my external. all is well with necflash I just wanted to tell you that winflash does not do proper booktype on +RW & +R SL

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

I guess the enclosure does not allow a command that retrieves the current booktype settings. While the commandline version does not evaluate this value, the GUI version only allows changing of the values that are allowed according to the command version.

Since it seems to work in general and this problem only comes up with this enclosure, there's probably not much I can do about it.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

i test binflash 1.45 on dublicator AD-5170A.
Dumping work fine, but flashing not work :
Identified drive: 27
Detected drive from Firmware: 26.
Firmware is for a different drive.

bug in firmware detection function (D570 and D57D detected as type 26, but D57D must be 27).

Bug found and already fixed in my sourcecode. But I cannot build all versions while I'm at work, so this has to be delayed a little.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

BTW, I hope people realize that when you are upgrading in a combo IDE enclosure, always use USB2 to do any flashing. Firewire does not always pass all the commands, and cannot be used reliably for flashing drives. You must use USB2. This is a universal rule, and not specific to any particular drive, chipset, or OS.

I repeat, do not use Firewire (1394) to flash your IDE optical drives. It is not reliable for this task. Always use USB2 for flashing/upgrading.

I upgraded my AD-7200A in a PL-3507 via USB2, using the GUI version, and had no problems.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

In some cases even USB2 can be unreliable for flashing while with different chipsets even Firewire might work.

Really I didn't know thaT because I always get a good flash and always used 1394 instead of usb but i guess the opposite is the case instead so Iwill use your advise now it's just that when upgrading the firmware on my duplicator I have to flash 4 pioneer 112d's or whatever wqhen the 116 improves I amgoing to use them in my duplicator

It's been a long since you replied to my earlier questions but I had given up trying to flash my 7201S - everything I tried failed.

On a whim I booted my machine using a Knoppix DVD and tried the linux version BINFLASH - worked first time.

Now all I need is a Linux GUI version

That will probably still take a long time. In the very distant future, flashing might be integrated with QueryDVD. However with the current development speed this could be in 10 or 20 years

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

I have a NEC/Optiarc 7540A burner inside a Sony DRX-S70U USB enclosure. When I try to flash any firmware to this drive, I get the following error:

Identified drive: 33
Detected drive from Firmware: 33

Entering safe mode
Sending firmware to drive at 0x030000
Sending firmware to drive at 0x038000
// sptxSay.DeviceIoControl: x79 (121) The semaphore timeout period has expired.
// sptxSay x 0 0 8020 E (ioctl status length senseLength)
Error sending firmware to drive
Error while flashing firmware

I am using 1.45a.

Dumping the firmware has no problems, and I noticed the drive should be supported as of 1.35. This is a problem on both the Windows and Windows GUI versions. I have not tried with other versions.

Any thoughts?

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

This could be caused by several problems like IDE chipset or drivers. GUI and command line use the same code for flashing, so the result is expected to be the same.

You might try flashing with a different operating system (Linux)

So I tried the Mac OSX version (should be similar to Linux, right?). I saw all the proper dialog that appeared like it was sending the firmware to the drive, but when I tried the drive, it was still the same old firmware originally there.

Basically, it said it flashed to the drive, but it didn't really write to it. The enclosure is the stock one that Sony packages with it. Could their enclosure have some sort write lock?
