Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

I just got a Dell XPS M1730 and it came with a Optiarc AD-5560A and I have not been able to find a modified firmware for this drive. What I really want is riplock removed and bitsetting options so I can backup my Xbox 360 games as this is needed. I have read that maybe it is a re badged drive and I saw that Liggy asked for a screen shot of the drive in Nero Infotool so here it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

This definitely does not look like a drive based on a NEC chipset. On a different forum I could read that the 7530 drive is based on a mediatek chipset. The same could be valid for the 5560. However Codeking's tools were not able to dump the firmware either

So until I or someone else figures out how to dump the firmware there is nothing that I can do, correct?

It's probably rather someone else than you but your help would surely be required

I guess Nero CD-DVD Speed does not allow changing the booktype settings of this drive?

I have not tried that and I will do so. I also want riplock off. ripping at 3x should be illegal.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

Probably really a Mediatek based drive then. Binflash support should be quite unlikely then.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

There are tools available for Mediatek based drives, but I'm not sure if your drive is supported. Maybe this one works for you.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

I have the same exact drive in my Vostro laptop. I haven't been able to burn squat on it without TONS of errors, no matter what media code I use. I did notice that Dell has a new firmware update for this drive though, located below. Don't know if it addresses the problems though - just found it about 2 minutes ago and haven't updated yet.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

Just wanted to say,.... THANKS
I thought I had ended up w/ a 50 pack of coasters, +R media, but apparently newer than my AD3100 (dell OEM) could handle. Used Liggy and Dee's software to re-identify the drive, flashed the 2.1b bitsetting firmware, and the drive has purred. Incredibly happy, thank you for your time and effort!

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

Hi koliz
Check you flashed the drive with the bitsetting firmware. The correct version is 1.05bt_RPC1. Also you may like to try setting the booktype with CD-Speed rather than Binflash.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 I jsut recieved and it has the AD-5170S. I attempted to flash 1m1_rpc1 and it kicked back that the Drive was unsupported. Here is the output:

--- Start of identification ---
Optiarc - DVD+-RW AD-5170S
Optiarc - DVD RW AD-5170S
5131373551313735302E30350000000081000000000000000000000081F5C2BA
FF5EC6D13162E41C5D13E4F600090B8FDACA631080FF1D1C003FCE70C7
--- End of identification ---

It appears to have firmware 101B

Thanks,

JH

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

The AD-5170S already is supported since Binflash version 1.40. If it does not work for you, your SATA controller or its driver probably does not support sending some of the commands that Binflash requires.

Did you run Binflash as root? Kernels since (I think) 2.6.9 do not forward the required commands to the drive if the program has no root privileges. Adding one or two "-v" to the scan command will give additional output.

Shouldn't be. So far I have not encountered any problems caused by x64 instead of 32 bit Windows.

Running as root works (at least it detects it). Is there any later version of the NEC 2510A firmware than 2.19?

At least no firmware that I have and I don't think there is any available. Considering that the 2510 was sold about 4 years ago, I don't think there will ever be a newer one.

Not interesting as it works with root privileges.

Re: Binflash - NEC/Optiarc firmware flasher and dumper

Hi -

I appear to have successfully used necflash/binflash v1.44 under Fedora Core 8 running kernel 2.6.24.3-34.fc8 to flash my ND-3500A from 2.18 to 2.1b. I flashed from an NEC/Optiarc standard .exe firmware file using the following command line:

# ./necflash -v -flash nd3500-dvd/2347_FW_ND-3500A_win21B/NECND350_v21B.exe /dev/sg3

Nice work, especially seeing as Windows 98SE no longer boots on this hardware (too much memory?)
