Well, great program, would be nice to examine the FW on my HDDVD drive however (to fix my busted player, got two drives, one works, one dont!), however, its unsupported, so heres the data from it. Thanks, and hope it can be added in a future version

Hi,
I have a dvd drive that identifies itself as a NEC ND-1100A. It actually came from a television set-top DVD recorder. I tried to identify the firmware version using nero infotool but the process made my system hang.
I then found this Binflash utility and tried to use it to update to any of the 1100A's firmwares that I could get (1.9.1 and 1.9.3) but when I try to do so I get the following question/error "Flashing your drive's firmware is not yet supported. Would you like to write a drive information file instead?" Then it creates the following file as identify.txt which advies me to post the information here, so here goes ;-)

The ND-1100A is supported by Binflash in general, but the identification file indicates a problem in the communication between your PC and this drive. Looks like the command for reading data from your drive fails.

However this drive will probably not support many of the recordables that are currently for sale.

Hello Liggy

i just buy a used ND-1300A ,but i suspect that it is in fact a ND-1100A not 1300,some one flash it to 1300(this is a retrofit drive,the laser head maybe changed and the shell is also repainted)

and I use you winflash try to dump the current firmware, it's give me a error log listed below:

I just got an optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A, but when I try to flash it with latest firmware (binflash) I got:

I have a NEC 3500AG and since I'm having some issues with MIT Fuji's -R, it was suggested elsewhere that I might want to upgrade the firmware. Question for you the all-knowing wizard of firmware is (a) should I check which version is in the drive, (b) are there options with regard to what firmware might be better (like ordinary or "mad dog"), and can I use the GUI with WXP OK?

BTW, I should note that I never had issue with MIJ Verbatim -R or Verbatim +R DL to this day... just can't find any MIJs in my neighborhood right now so I bought a 25 pack of the Fuji's and three out of three were rejected when I tried to burn from my HDD files (that I know are good).

This post should be in the main NEC forum, not under the Binflash sub-forum.

a) Yes, use any applicable version of Binflash (Win32 GUI works great) to first backup your existing firmware.

b) Read the NEC FAQ in the main forum. It discusses the differences associated with original, bitsetting, fast, RPC1 firmwares. The latest for the ND-3500 is the 2.1B, so I would use any variation of that one.

Try to deactivate DMA mode for this drive. hdparm should do the trick. If this doesn't help, try using a 40 conductor cable for the flashing procedure

Another question: when flashing is over (on linux) should I restart my computer or I can continue using my drive? It is working, however I don't know if new firmware kicks in right after flashing.

If it's working and and you could successfully enable DMA again, I don't think there's a need to reboot. At least I do not reboot each time I flash a firmware.

ACTIMA ADRW-HOOP is one of the OEM version of NEC ND-1100A ,can you make it be supported by necflash?

It doesn't have to be a problem with your drive, but with your remaining hardware that doesn't provide the correct values when trying to read data from the flash memory. Instead of the real content it only sends "00" Bytes. Nothing I can do about it.

It's running Windows Vista on my PC and I have NEC/OPTIARC 7173A connected to JMicron 363 controller integrated to ASUS P5W-DH Motherboard. The problem is that I want to flash the drive to new release of your firmware (1.O3). I used your flasher but operation failed. I tried boot
Windows Vista in safe mode but nothing changed. Error submitting checksum message from flasher don't disappear! What can i do? Say you in advance that there isn't specified tool for changing working mode of Jmicron 363 controller from UDMA to PIO and viceversa. Anyone any ideas! Suggestion?

my bad. But the solution was pretty much the same (i.e. disable DMA) under Linux.

I'm not sure if there's an easy solution to this problem at all. UDMA4 definitely doesn't work as long as NEC/Optiarc don't fix their drives' bootcodes and JMicron doesn't seem to support anything else than the max. speed a drive usually offers. Using a 40 conductor cable could help. If it doesn't, you will probably have to attach your drive to a different IDE connector. If the JMicron is the only one on your board, you'll probably have to use a different PC.

Hello guys, a suggestions for all. If you are running Windows Vista/XP on
yours PC and have a NEC drive connected to JMicron 36x SATA/PATA
controller and you need to update firmware take a look at this method i
write as follows:

- Setup JMicron controller as basic working in motherboard BIOS
- Don't setup RAID or AHCI if you have only CD/DVD-ROM drive on
the IDE connector.
- Install JMicron software drivers but only with the standard IDE option
so don't select the advanced SCSI/RAID option.
- Go forward and proceed.
- After finished reboot your windows.
- After restart you will have all the CD/DVD drive connected to JMicron
that works in PIO mode and not DMA/UDMA mode.
- Run firmware update application Binflash or similar and push on flash
button. Everything will work and you'll have finally an updated drive.
Seems if you decide to dump firmware before.
Hope to be helpfully for everybody have this kind of problems.

Of Course, after this, reinstall JMicron Drivers with SCSI/RAID option active,
reboot, ad finally all drives connected will work in UDMA specified mode.
I did so and every step went ok!

This drive shoud be working with Binflash version 1.39 now.
