Re: Binflash - NEC firmware flasher and dumper

I have a 4550A drive and I ran into some flashing trouble.

Code:
#./necflash -scan
List of supported devices:

Device : /dev/hda
Vendor : _NEC
Model : DVD_RW ND-4550A
When I try to flash my drive with binflash 1.37 (with 1.08 4550a firmware) I get:

Code:
Identified drive: 13
Detected drive from Firmware: 12

Firmware is for a different drive
Same thing happens in windows. What could be wrong?

maybe you change drive ID to 4551 ? (maybe play with NECDriveConv or cross-flashing ?:-). So - revert ID to 4550 (NecDriveConv) and try again

Re: Binflash - NEC firmware flasher and dumper

Well, actually I upgraded to 4551, but after I realized that labelflash is useless for me, I downgraded back to 4550A (with necdriveconv). Also drive is recognized as DVD_RW ND-4550A.

Note: I can flash the drive with original nec flasher.

Re: Binflash - NEC firmware flasher and dumper

Can I use this firmware 1.37 on my NEC AD7173A? Becasue my NEC can´t burn 8cm DVD, I always get "Power calibration error". Maybe this firmware will make it work.

drive ID used only by BinFlash for ident drive and start safe-mode. Original NEC flasher use another way to ident drive in system and work in this case. So - run again NecDriveConv and check ID (and change to 4550).

Already did that, but still doesn't work, but then I used bootcode flasher, changed to 4551A, and flashed without problems with 4551A firmware.
Consider it solved, I just can't figure out why it doesn't accept 4550A firmware with proper ID.

you upgrade to 4551 with bootflasher and again downgrade to 4550 wtih bootflasher ? or just change ID from 4551 to 4550 with Nec DriveConv ?

It's not a bug in Binflash. It's just another check to make sure that the firmware matches the drive's hardware. It's needed for some drives - even for my own ND-7551A drive.

use my PLSCSI-scripts http://crazycat69.narod.ru/nec-dvdrw/NecID.zip for set all IDs. edit setup.bat (drive name in system) and start set4550.bat
It's must help.

Re: Binflash - NEC firmware flasher and dumper

Under Mac OS X 10.4.8, NecflashX doesn't seem to recognize my external FW LaCie 3520A. Tried using BinFlash under the Terminal app, but that doesn't seem to help either.

I've also tried this on my NEC 3550 internal drive, and get the same results. Anyone know the reason, and how to fix? Haven't found a solution in my research. Short of connecting them to my PC, nothing helps. And I'd rather do all of this within my Mac system.

Any input would help. Thanks.

Re: Binflash - NEC firmware flasher and dumper

When I try to run binflash on Mac OSX 10.3 I get an error :

dyld: ./nec can't open library: /usr/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

(and there is no such library indeed)

I found some messages about the same problem in the Internet, but no solution!
If the author of the program is reading this, please, HELP!
I use Mac OSX in normal (default) installation. What else do I need to install to make binflash work? Thanks.

p.s.
My drive is Optiarc AD-7543A

Re: Binflash - NEC firmware flasher and dumper

I cannot really say much about this because I'm not very firm in programming for Mac OS X. But from looking at this post, I guess that my programming environment creates executables which require 10.4 or higher.

Re: Binflash - NEC firmware flasher and dumper

Ohhh... I see

quote from this link: "You need to use GCC3.3 to target pre-10.3.9." So it seems to be a solution!

May be it is not a bad idea to use it? You know better, of course, but AFAIK most of command-line tools do not really need the latest compilers... So of it is possible, it would be great!

There are still people who uses pre-10.3.9 versions, either because they have old computers, or they find the latest versions of MacOSX to be buggy.

Thanks

The next time I update Binflash, I will check if GCC3.3 is available in my environment at all and if I can still build universal binaries with older GCC versions.

Tried to dump the firmware of my 7173S. That was not possible.

Support for this drive will be added in Binflash version 1.38 sometimes soon.

Re: Binflash - NEC firmware flasher and dumper

According to Dee it does. 32 and 64 Bit versions are supposed to work.
I cannot test this myself because I'm not going to install this crappy OS until it's really needed.

Re: Binflash - NEC firmware flasher and dumper

Binflash version 1.38 has just been released including support for the Optiarc AD-7173S and I hopefully made it work on OS X 10.3 again (even 10.2 should accept this executable). It would be great if someone can confirm this because I'm unable to use Binflash on a Mac.

Thanks for your confirmation. Just to be sure: You're running 10.3 on a PPC hardware?
