Sorry all but I've wanted to ask for a while ... how important is it to update the firmware? I have a 3500 AG running at the original 2.16 from when I bought it an newegg when it just came out in October of 2004. To date, it burns/plays/runs everything fine, I can burn DVDs, CDs, using 1click, Nero, Roxio, etc. I know with other patches/updates/newer versions sometimes the "older" version was better.

So do I need to update to 2.19? If I do, can I jump straight to it or do I need to update to 2.17 then to 2.18 then to 2.19.

Thanks

You can jump direct to latest 2.1A. I use 2.1A with good result in my 3500A.

You get updated mediasupport, when upgrade the firmware.

...not to mention better burn quality in some cases.

Like tamgelikah, I've been happy with my burns from my 3500. But I recently picked up a stack of 16X Memorex which would not burn. Would upgrading from 2.16 to 2.1A allow me to burn more brands?

Possibly, depends on the media code.

RICOHJPNR03, PRODISC R04, PHILIPS C16, MCC 004, CMC MAG M01, RITEKF1, and CMC MAG. AM3

are the currently available 16X Memorex offerings. All of them are supported by 2.1a, but I would recommend that you move up to 2.TG as it is improved by the best.

As always, burn you 16X media at 12X. I also would recommend MCC 004 from Verbatim. It is much better than the other offerings from Memorex and, so far, Verbatim is always MCC.
