Oops ...that's right...well by the time I can afford the media who knows what burner software I will be using. I may go back to Nero 6 (it worked for me just seemed to have to much bloat) or maybe they will patch 5 to dual layer capable or who knows what.

I have a DVD+RW Memorex 4X which is in fact a Philips 041 and Recordnow would burn it only at 1X. Anyone knows why? Nero 6.3.1.15 (the latest) burns correctly at 4X. I installed yesterday Herrie's firmware from this thread and also bought this Memorex. Is it the firmware or the software? Should I look for an upgrade for the software?

It is the firmware!
Your burner is controlling the write speeds.

If it's the firmware which is limiting burn speeds, why is RecordNow limited to 1x while Nero burns at 4x? I think there's more to this than firmware limitations.

If your burner is not supported by Recordnow you will get the Min/Med/Max option for the burn speeds.
Maybe I'll understood IQz3r0 wrong, but after he updated his firmware he could write at 4x.

I get a worse burn on FUJIFILM03 @ 8x using Herrie B5 than stock 1.06. Check my other thread "Things are looking up ".

Then check this topic to add support for newer drives so you wont have only Max/Mid/Min.

Its all good thought cuz I know soon I WILL be donating to the cause, though I just tried this beta firmware based off HP and afterward my NEC 2510a would not recognize any media and when it did would take forever to.

The flash worked great but for some reason still wouldn't let me bitset or even pick up my Ridata G04 media.

I will just wait for the hacked based off the orginal firmware and then test again. Thanks for all the great work Herrie! Trust me I will donate once this puppy is unlocked! Unless it would motivate you more if I donated now...

Peace out

Herrie, any news on next beta or release? I know you work hard, but sounds like we all waiting and just a small note about possible date would be really great!

Thank you very much!!!

Yours, Maxim.

He said in another post about a week or two.

He also mentioned that it would address the ProdiscS03 media issue, as well as be a native Windows flasher that would flash 2500A and 2510A and OEM drive versions.

Hey guys, good info here. I have a question. I just purchased a 2510a from newegg with some 4x media. I was told in another board that the firmware update from Herrie would allow that drive to burn any media at 8x. Is that true. Also, under Nero 6.x, the drive comes up with a max burn speed of 4x, which is true for RW burning, but R burning should be at 8x correct? Is the drive messed up somehow or is Nero looking at the max RW burn speed?

Thanks a lot for any help, I appreciate it.

1. Herrie's firmware lets you write most 4x media at 8x. 2x media is limited to 2x in most cases, as I recall.

2. The speed available for burning is determined by the firmware, not Nero. Since you have a 4x disc, and the firmware sees it as having a max 4x write speed, that's what Nero reports. If you had Herrie's firmware installed, chances are it would show 8x instead (as long as the firmware allowed for 8x writing on that media).

3. If you were to put in 8x media in the drive (and the firmware sees it as 8x capable) then Nero would also report 8x as the write speed.

4. The stock NEC ND2510A firmware does allow for some media to be written at higher speeds than rated. This includes Taiyo Yuden media. I think all 4x TY media can be written at 8x. It also includes Rich/Ritek-made 4x DVD+R media with the mediacode of RICOHJNR01. This media can be written at 6x with the stock firmware. There are others available. If you search through the forums, some had posted a list from the firmware about which medias could be written at a higher speed in the default NEC firmware.

Hope that helps you.

According to this site, the media could be any number of different types, including Ritek G04 (sometimes good, sometimes awful), Princo (craptastic), or Longten (average, some people get really good results with it).

For all of them, the stock NEC firmware will be 4x. Herrie's firmware can write them all at 8x, I think.

While NewEgg customers may have rated it highly, its FAR from the best quality media out there. You can flash your drive with Herrie's firmware, though personally, I wouldn't try writing them at 8x. Although personally, I stick with better media.

Hey just a question when I burnt this dvd movie on my herrie's firmware.. and I played it in my dvd player the Pioneer HT900 or something.. it started doing the flickering screen. Is it because of the encoding of the film or the format? cuz I practically burnt the same thing with the other movies that I get in .img format. So I have to play it on my philips dvd player to have it work.
I just want to clarify what could be the problem. Thanks

The thread for beta 4 was closed - but I just had to post this. Got my NEC 2500A today - after it sat in ParcelForce depot for over a week (tried to deliver to the wrong address - but that's another story!).

Toss up between beta4 and beta5, thought I'd try 5, double layer's not much good without the media! and I can always update later.

I also have a Lite-On 411S (external) which has been upgraded using the Zebra mod. I always semed to get a spike at the beginning or at the end - with average errors anywhere between 80 and 160 - with the occasional good burn averaging 27-30ish. Keep in mind 4 speed burn.

This K-Probe shows a Ritek G04 x4 (Printable) burned at 8 speed using RecordNow Max v4.5 (with the engine update) with Herries 1.07 beta4.

I'm speechless.. well not quite. Thanks to all on this site for info provided and especially Herrie for all his work.

Here it is - eat you hearts out Lite-On owners (only kidding!)
