Virus programmers are becoming very clever. They can hide a virus inside a lot of your regular file formats these days.

But, you can usually catch a virus (hidden in a downloaded file) before you open it up. As a general rule of thumb, I'd recommend scanning all downloaded files for viruses with an Anti-Virus program before you even attempt to open the file.

And even then you cannot be sure if the file is "clean"...

As long as you keep your Anti-Virus program up to date with the latest virus definitions then you should be well protected.

Malware authors and distributors (note: this is a big$$$ business these days) are much faster than the people who create signature files for AV software.

Pirate Bay gets props for taking the fight to the enemy!

They also have a well-used comments facility so you can usually get a feel for the quality of the download and any issues (malware/virus/etc).

torrents.to allows you to query most of the big public access sites with one search - nice!
