I can't help with a source/link, but I haven't been able to log on to WINMX for a 2 or 3 days now.

If anyone else can, I would be interested in knowing.

Re: RIAA shuting down WimMX and other causing more new p2p?

So far you can still directly export a list of OpenNap servers from NapMx to the WinMX client and download.
You just won't be able to connect to the primary or secondary WinMX servers because they have been shut down.

Re: RIAA shuting down WimMX and other causing more new p2p?

I think u all know that WinMx is back online again. This is great but what about LimeWire, some said that they are adding license to the files or something like that, are they really do it to all the files or just some of it, will LimeWire come out with a patch 2?

Lime Wire will add license checks for shared content via Lime Wire, but because its code is open. The poeple at Forst Wire are developing a completly free version. Some more info on my blog.

Offically No ... LimeWire will still be available, but extreme DRM checks for files will come in to play.

FrostWire is an open source variation, only difference is, it'll probably lack support from the core developement team. Still its open source that means there might be better people out there to help.

Popular examples:

1. Linux
2. Azureus - Bit Torrent Client

So the RIAA has actually helped increase support

According to the Slyck Interview :

When can we expect the first release of FrostWire?

That depends on how much we rush it. Basically it is not very difficult to create a FrostWire package and make it available on our website. Our goal is to offer the first versions by mid-October. The website, new themes and the rest should be complete by December. (The website, FrostWire.com is already running - although there is not much content yet).

You can download NapMX and use it to update the list of OpenNap servers currently online.
That list can then be exported directly to WinMX (must be running). You can then connect to these OpenNap servers (in addition to WinMX servers) and use them to enhance your searches and downloads.

Here the NapMX updater is shown in the first image.
The second image shows the list of OpenNap severs that I've added with NapMX.
Note that I'm connected to 5 Primary and 10 Secondary WinMX servers, but I'm also connected to 21 additional OpenNap servers.

The people behind Limewire are willingly digging their own grave. Do they not know adding DRM is a very effective way to greatly lighten your server load?

Sounds interesting... will it perform better (in relation to search results) than the current Limewire or will it be basically the same thing opensourced?

Server load has very little to do with it, Gnutella is very dsitributed, but RIAA pressure has gotten to them, forcing them to add these restrictions. They don't want to look like they're the backdoor letting the pirates in.

UPDATE: According to Slyck

"FrostWire has made the first important step towards this goal today by releasing their first beta client. Based on LimeWire 4.9.33, this release is basically a "clean" version - no pop-ups, no nag screens, no inhibiting features. Like LimeWire, it’s a simplistic client that gets the job done.

The great challenge confronting FrostWire will be the maintenance of the innovative features that LimeWire brought about. Will FrostWire become stagnant or will the open source community pull through and continue LimeWire’s strides? Only time will tell, but smart money is betting on the latter."

I know. I was using that sentence as a figure of speech. What I meant was "add DRM and people will stop using your program in a heartbeat".

Re: RIAA shuting down WimMX and other causing more new p2p?

there are quite a few other places to d/l from which are far better. I became frustrated with winmx long ago because of the penetration of bogus files with some kind of tracking hash attached.

Re: RIAA shuting down WimMX and other causing more new p2p?

The WinMX community is back, the files are back, and the users are taking a stand. Get connected Today.

It is time for the RIAA to understand that they cannot destroy filesharing by intimidation any longer. They may be able to bully Corporations, but the users are not going to sit by and let it happen.

MXPIE is an effort by the users and for the users, with an agenda of making WinMX a p2p network not only for the users, but maintained, organized and perpetuated by the people.

Come Join us, we believe that we can make a difference in this fight to take away our rights. We welcome all of those who are tired of going from one p2p network to another simply because the RIAA flexed its billions of dollars worth of muscles.

MXPIE is quick, easy and free to use, it contains no spyware, adware or any other form of malware. We even provide a manual modification that allows you to see exactly what is being done that only takes minutes to do yourself.

Another site worth note is Computer Problem Help Forum, this site has also been at the forefront of this movement, and can help you with any general computer problem that may or may not be related to WinMX.

Check out the MXPIE Website for everything you need.

I hope to see you on WinMX soon! Realtime help is available for WinMX 3.53 users. Go to WinMX Channels.

Re: RIAA shuting down WimMX and other causing more new p2p?

I'm still on winmx, no worries there. Just a question, winmx was shutdown and through the patch works again now. Does this now mean that RIAA cannot shut it down now? Or can they still shut it down? Not real computer smart, sorry.

Solve WinMX's problems (endless queuing, slow speeds and polluted files) and I'll be happy to join your community. In the meantime, I'll stick with RevConnect and torrents.

By the way: you are so right in that last statement... I still mourn Audiogalaxy. The p2p protocol wasn't anything to write home about, but the main servers keeping a list of everything available everywhere in the world meant you could find ANYTHING. I found songs on AG I haven't ever found again in any other p2p. Every now and again I check just to see if there's some lonely soul somewhere that might be sharing them, but all too often I'm the only user having them in all the network. *sigh*

Re: RIAA shuting down WimMX and other causing more new p2p?

Bear17 ... they blew their only chance to close WinMX down. The one who wrote the software is Front Code Technologies and they chose to close as per RIAA's cease and desist letter. Now the RIAA can't target anyone else cos there are no known targets for them to do so. Now the WinMX users came up with their own patch and solve the problem themselves. RIAA did not expect a user revolt, nor a WinMX revolution There isn't any way they can stop us now.

Fallingwater ... I have my best downloading the last 3 mths on WinMX ... the queues are gone, no fake files either if you use Peer Guardian and seriously at cable connections, the average speed was 100kb/sec downloads Try WinMX and see what you guys have been missing
