Failed to read Sector - L-EC Uncorrectable Error

Sorry for the repost, but I thought it got lost amongst others. Well here it is again.
I have been using DVD Decrypter for some time now with every try being a success. So now that I am trying to back up one of my movies (Star wars) I can't rip it in the first place. It goes to about 50% then generates an error saying it can't read a certain sector. By the way I did check the surface, it's clear as a mirror.

Here is the log file (some of it is too long and not useful and so i removed it ...):
Errors are towards the end

Ah forget it, I'll do it right out of the DVD drive. I don't know why I can't rip this movie.

Re: Failed to read Sector - L-EC Uncorrectable Error

Try download AnyDVD and try to rip again with AnyDVD running the backgound. This looks like Sony's ARccOS Protection.

Re: Failed to read Sector - L-EC Uncorrectable Error

Trying it now and getting the same problem. It could be a disc issue, but I should mention that the movie plays fine and I don't see any scratches on its surface (anything significant). It just doesn't read anything beyond the first bad sector. WOuld that mean that if it was s bad disc everything beyond the first bad sector would have to be scratched? Then it is unlikely that it is a bad disc right?

To use Snatch lingo "sneaky f***ing russian". It seems like they purposely inserted bad sectors that have no meaning in the DVD. For anyone experiencing this problem read:

Re: Failed to read Sector - L-EC Uncorrectable Error

I am experiencing the same problem with DVD Decrypter. However, I do not know if it is a problem with my DVD reader/writer. I am tryingto copy DVD movies that I copied in the past and they do not work neither.

Any help?

Sounds like a drive issue to me, tried cleaning it? Try a movie that you KNOW works and post back.

Re: Failed to read Sector - L-EC Uncorrectable Error

-------------------Ripping DVDs with Sector Read Errors----------------

I don't know if this is a crude form of copy protection, but because I am seeing it on more recent high value disks I strongly suspect that it is. If not then the manufactures are getting very sloppy. That's the bad news. The good news is that the technique is self limiting because if you create too many read errors a normal DVD player won't read the disk and the customer will get annoyed. So here is how to RIP such disks.....

[Step 1 - Rip] Use DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn version 2.3.2.0. Do NOT use a more recent version of ImgBurn because they got pressured into dumbing the program down - so later versions no longer work on protected disks.

You can hunt around the web and find these programs. ImgBurn 2.3.2.0 is best because it has more functionality than DVD Decrypter. However, both these programs share a common engine, so either will do for our purposes.

As has already been mentioned by other contributors we need to set the Read Options so that 'Ignore Read Errors' is checked and 'Number of Retries' is set to zero. The fact that these programs allow us to do this is the reason we are using them [Note to Slysoft - this would be a good option on AnyDVD or CloneDVD]. Start the program ripping. Set this up as an overnight run because even with the options set as described it takes about 8 secs to pass through a read error and there are typically 200-300 such read errors. In practice the total time to rip is likely to be measured in hours.

The result will be the usual set of TS VOB files etc. HOWEVER because of the original disk errors this file structure is typically damaged (pointers are wrong) and playback or creating ISO files for the VLC player is very problematic. So we need to repair this damaged file system. Note: If it were too badly damaged such repair would not be possible, but as we mentioned there are unlikely to be that many errors because the DVD would not be marketable.

[Step 2 - Repair] To repair the file system we use FixVTS version 1. This is a tiny brilliant piece of Freeware available from [http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arch...vts_guide.cfm]. It is very intuitive to use and takes about 30 mins to repair a set of TS VOB files that have been ripped to the hard disk. At this point we have a complete ripped set of DVD files that work and we can then use CloneDVD or whatever your favorite software happens to be to extract just those files you need for the Title movie - assuming you want to keep the space requirements to the minimum. Note: Do create target files with subtitles - not only for non-English speakers but also for the deaf or hard of hearing. Adding subtitles (or closed captions) takes up hardly any extra space.

Have fun!!
