TDK 161040 = Plextor
TDK 161040X = Sanyo
TDK 161040XA = ????

*Who* made this TDK 161040XA drive of mine? I cannot find a single shred of information about it at all. I'm having a few intermittent problems with it and would like to find an updated firmware for it. The only problem is that I don't know who made the thing! It came with firmware TD35 which is sort of close to the name format that LiteOn uses, but not exactly. And it has two LEDs in front whereas LiteOn's only have one.

Can anyone help?

TDK doesn't tell you who makes particular drive models and they don't keep up to date with any of the firmwares anyways (I run Plextor's 1.10 on my other TDK 121032 drive which only has 1.08 on TDK's site).

Finding out who made this 161040XA is my *only* option.

Mechanical drive made by SANYO, so might want to check both companies - Plextor (SKC is its parent company) and SANYO.

TDK 161040XA IS Plextor PW-161040.
And it's NOT made by Plextor OR SANYO, it's made by Plextor AND SANYO FOR TDK. All TDK did they put their name "TDK VeloCD" on this drive.

NO IT IS NOT! Why is that so hard for you to understand? TDK uses whomever makes the cheapest drive period. They do not mix and match parts. All they do is slap their own TDK faceplate and blue tray on it. That is why throughout the lifespan of the 161040 product they went through three distinctly different drive manufactures. Only the TDK 161040 drive is the Plextor PX-W1610TA. And likewise only the TDK 161040X is the Sanyo CRD-BP1400P just with a TDK faceplate. This 161040XA is definitely neither of these drives.

But believe it or not Plextor does mix, they use SANYO mechanical drive in many (if not in all since 2000) models.

Yes, Plextor does use some Sanyo parts (everyone knows that), but I'm not talking about either of those companies, I'M TALKING ABOUT TDK DAMN IT! TDK! This particular drive has NOTHING to do with the 16X Plextor or 16X Sanyo drives at all. GOT IT? All I want to know is *what* is this drive a rebadge of. Ahhh!

He is positive it's Plextor's.
Why are you so sure that it has nothing to do with SANYO or Plextor? Did you disassemble it and check all codes? Or package is marked: "No Plextor or SANYO inside"?

This person you know obviously has one of the other TDK 161040 drives (there are three distinct variations of them in existance after all). And yes, one of them is certifiably a Plextor and the other is a full Sanyo. Believe me, I know what I'm doing. This drive is is not like any Plextor drive I have ever seen. I've seen some of the other various TDK models and it is usually quite easy to tell if it is a Plextor or Sanyo or whatnot but TDK already used Plextor and Sanyo for the other drives in their 161040 family. But I have no experience with LiteOn drives whatsoever and the online pictures for the LiteOn drives still look slightly different than this one.

Hmmm...maybe I should just try LiteOn's DOS flasher to see if it can dump the firmware from this 161040XA. If it does work, then I'll know for sure it is a LiteOn or not.

I believe Nero has this option. CloneCD might be another choice.
Well i asked that guy specifically about TDK 161040XA drive's origin, but he could be wrong though.

you are right with all of these but i dont think the xa is a lite-on as the first lite-on for tdk was the 24x (i could be wrong) by the way what is the firmware it uses?

slayerking, firmware is "TD35." If it isn't a LiteOn, then I'm stumped as to what it may be.

kuryuka, that isn't anything new. Everyone knows that site very well.

(Didn't have a chance to try dumping firmware yet)

How about just give TDK and LiteOn a shot - send them e-mail and ask what do they know about it?
TDK may want not to disclose their little secrets, but LiteOn i think will reply.

That would be their first reply in years!
For some reason Lite-On really hate e-mails...
