VIA PCI IDE cards, RAID,and onboard IDE controllers

Dear All. I wanted to increase the number of my IDE devices by two. So I bought a VT6420 from VIA technologies. This turned out to be a RAID controller supporting 2 parallel IDE/ATA channels called PATAs and 2 serial IDE/ATA channels called SATAs. I installed the PCI card and used the CD that came with it. After a lot of hustle I managed to get the new hardware to work. Now I have the configuration that you see below. But there are problems: My onboard IDE channel controllers disappeared from the Device Manager and replaced by Acculogic controllers, which do not give me access to DMA and PIO modes. Secondly the system has slowed down considerably and this is very annoying. Now I intend to do a fresh OS installation hoping to get my onboard IDE controllers back and to get rid of Acculogic controllers which seem to be outdated pieces of software. When doing the reinstallation how should I proceed? Help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there!

I moved your thread to the General hardware forum, cause I think it belongs there...

Anyhow, you might be able to solve your problem just by deleting the onboard IDE controller from the hardware manager and then reboot. When Windows redetects the controller, it could be that it's detected as the right controller again.

Or try with the RAID controller in another PCI-slot.

VIA PCI IDE, RAID, acculogic controllers

Thanks for the tips. In fact I tried both and this did not help. I wonder when I am reinstalling the system what will happen to this card. Would XP itself find a driver for it or will it insisit that I supply a CD from the manufacturer. In the second case it will not be possible to get rid of this acculogic driver. Again any help is welcome. Thanks.

Download the latest drivers for the card.
Connect your harddrives to the pci ide controller and your burners/roms to the mobo ide channel.
Most pci ide cards are not suited for properly running anything else than harddrives.
You won't be able to change PIO or DMA for your harddrives at device manager, but at the POST screen, you'll see that your harddisks are running at their maximum speed.

I have 2 harddrives connected on a Promise Ultra 100 TX2 and 4 writers connected to my mainboard.
Getting nice benchmarks from Sisoft Sandra with an average setup....

Seeing how you got an Intel system, you don't happen to have the IntelĀ® Application Accelerator installed did you? 'Cause that POS tend to cause a lot of problems instead of benefits. Uninstall it and see what happens.

Thanks for all the help. I did the following: I made a fresh installation of WinXP, which I had the intention to do anyway. I did not respond to F6 and let XP take care of it. At the end of the installation process, I saw that the hardware was not recognised. At that point I used the disc supplied with the controller. By miracle it did not install the acculogic drivers. So I got rid of them. Also I placed a hard drive on the VT6420 controller and used the normal IDE channels for my CD and DVD writers. Now the system starts up quicker. Problems seem to be sorted out. Thanks and good week-end to everyone.
