I have a Sony DW-D56A Slim in my Dell 6000 inspiron.

It used to burn beautifully at 8x. Now it burns only at 1x.

I have the latest Dell supported firmware PSD7 ...

On my secondary IDE, it says PIO even though I have "DMA if available" selected. I'm wondering if this is my problem? If so, how can I fix it? Dell BIOS do not allow me any options here. My primary channel is running in DMA. Is this drive even on the 2nd channel?

Both locations in device manager list my hd as location 0(0) and my dvdrw is also location 0(0)

If you have Nero run InfoTool and look at the configuration page. It will show you what IDE channel your drives are on and if DMA is enabled. I think you can download
InfoTool on Nero's website for free.
Did this problem start after installing any hardware or software?

Go to device manager and uninstall the IDE controller, then reboot and problems should be solved. Confirm UDMA mode after reboot.

Windows will re-install the controller driver on reboot, with DMA enabled. You've been the victim of a WindowsXP "feature" that switches it to PIO when reading errors are detected. Copy protected discs or damaged discs can do it, but sometimes XP just gets a bug up it's ass.
If that doesn't work, post back.
