Hi and Welcome!

since it is not sure if one of these adapters will work without problems if used with a DVD writer, I'd consider buying a PCI SATA controller card with Silicon Image 3112 or 3512 chipset. With the BASE BIOS (no RAID), they are known to support optical drives very well.
And these controller cards aren't more expensive than those adapters.

Any suggestions on one or a link to one, and how do they connect to the burner?

Is this one here, and do I now have to buy cables as well?

It looks to me that it might be cheaper to buy an external unit instead and return the Lite On.

BTW, how does one flash the non-RAID firmware ? I don't understand the 'flash' terminology.
I found another one with the 3114 chipset. Will that work too?

the BIOS or firmware is stored in a chip on the device. Writing a newer version into the device is called "flashing".

The steps to turn a SiI 3x12 RAID card into a non-RAID card:
  1. Look onto the chip of the card to identify it (3112 or 3512)

It looks like I am going to buy this one as it's the only one I can find that states 'SATAlink'. It has the 3114 chipset.

It's $5 cheaper than the exact same one at Amazon.com. I will let you know how it works after I install it.

The r####.bin file is the SATARAID BIOS and the b####.bin is the BASE BIOS. The ###.bin is an abbreviated BIOS intended for integration into system BIOS. Do NOT flash system BIOS into an add-in card BIOS. Use the included BASE BIOS with with the latest BASE driver(s). SATARAID BIOS supports RAID levels 0, 1, and 10. Use the included SATARAID BIOS with the latest RAID driver(s). Use the included system BIOS with the latest SATARAID Tool: SATARAID Management Utility 1.23 (Java) or 1.0.0.26 (non-Java)

For this part: basically, when Windows asks you where the drivers for the card are [if it asks], direct the Driver Installation Wizard to their location.

The rest of the directions should be pretty clear...
For 7a, it means to double-click the entry for the Silicon Image card.

What you added to the end of your post tells you which file is the BASE BIOS, which is the RAID BIOS, and which is the SYSTEM BIOS....and you want to work with the BASE BIOS.

This doesn't appear to be always true.
This card has a slightly shorter pin area, (though still PCI) forcing a different pin configuration.
Unless it is 64 bit related.

Using supposedly latest drivers via update (online) feature.



Trying to update this card via DOS, doesn't work either.
Well it might except it lists over 20 different chip references.
All of which seem to have nothing to do with Silicon Image.
I have come to the conclusion this variant acts like an on board controller. Despite being an addon.

I GOT A SILICON IMAGE 3114 PCI SATA controller board to use with my samsung sh-s203n (before they updated their fiormware which made it burn correctly with my sata raid controller) and i use vista ultimate 32 bit, when i installed it there was no flash bios tab in the device manager, in fact i could not find away to update the system bios so i could make it a satalink instead of a raid controller, i do not know what it is with vista, but that was my experience, also nothing showed up in the control panel either, i always got a message while booting up to make a raid set (if i used f4 to pause it). so i was left with no choice but to return the board to 3btech and another one to newegg for refunds without refunds for shipping left me out some money, i wish someone would explain what happened in this case, no ability to flash the bios...

I can only speak from my experience with both 3x12 and 3114 cards in WXP-32. The BIOS update tab doesn't show up with my nForce4 motherboard, even with the latest Silicon Image driver. However, when an optical drive was attached to one of the ports, then the update tab would appear. But I've always flashed to the Base BIOS through pure DOS via a W98 boot up disc. I currently have a 3114-based card in and all 4 optical drives are recognized correctly with no problems.

OK.
The two cards I have currently.
On the left the standard PCI card (in terms of length/pin config). Flashed easily in both DOS & Windows.
With the newer & slightly shorter (but still seen as conventional PCI card) on the right. Can't flash in Windows, DOS flashing, lists far too many references. None of which seem relevant to addon PCI cards.
Both to my knowledge have the latest drivers.
As clearly shown, one has BIOS tab the other doesn't.

Apparently some cards simply aren't flashable. I got a CP Technologies PCI SATA adapter and was told by their tech support it wasn't flashable. Fortunately PC Connection from whom it was purchased simply gave me credit for purchase price and told me I didn't have to return the card. I now have the one from the link in post #19 at http://club.cdfreaks.com/f142/lg-ggw...i-card-239838/ that has been used successfully by others. Note this Syba card has 4 internal SATA connections compared to just 1 or 2 for most other adapters I've found.

unless my glasses need some cleaning, these drivers are newer than those provided by SiI. Since

Not all cards are flashable (some are, but they require a tool from the card manufacturer). This is well documented in a document on Silicon Image support website. See http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportfaq.aspx#q5 and the PDF file linked there.

Having a drive connected is mandatory: "You must have a drive attached to the controller before you can program the flash chip...." (source: SiI Bios update instructions)

I think, now complete information about flashing SiI cards is given now in this thread. What about a list of cards that can be flashed or not?

Usually, I don't RTFM with SiI's package... Besides, I prefer flashing in DOS anyway without any drives attached.

IIRC, since most cards are preflashed with RAID BIOS, there could be issues when opticals are connected during POST, thus, Windows may not boot up properly. At least that's what I remembered.
