| Can anyone help me. I have recently part built a 'barebones' computer supplied from Novatech: Foxconn P9657AA mobo Intel Core 2 duo E6300 processor westernDigital Sata 2 250GB hard drive Sony AW-G170A-B2 DVD writer and SamsungSH-S182D writer I have had problems burning DVD +RW's (Tried several DatawriteClassic and Ricoh 4x discs) but am able to use DVD-RAM (Panasonic), DVD-RW(Verbatim), DVD R(Verbatim), CD R and CDRW Software used : Windows XP Pro SP2 Nero 7 I have identical problems BOTH DVD writers : Nero displays an error formatting the discs at the beginning of the process. I have tried adjusting everything within the Nero software I van think of to no avail. I do not understand why Device manager lists both drives as SCSI devices despite them being IDE and connected to IDE port on the motherboard. I do not know whether this is relevant to my DVD +RW writing problem. I originally had just the Sony drive but got the Samsung as well in case there was problem with Sony. If anyone could give me some advice I would be really grateful! |

Do you use IntelĀ® Application Accelerator drivers. Use Windows native IDE drivers. |
| Thank you JBV for your advice, Please would you tell me how I can find out the information you refer to - I have looked at device manager for the driver details for my DVD drives and the Driver file details are listed as: Provider: Roxio File version: 7.0.1.28 I am unsure whether these are native IDE drivers or not. Any further advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks |
| It seems I had the same problem. I could burn DVD+RW that had already been burned, but I couldn't burn a new one because it couldn't be formatted. I had no problems as long as I had the drive plugged into the motherboard. But when I plugged it into a PCI card IDE/SATA controller, I had your problem. The problem controller was a Promise SATAII 150 TX2plus controller which was designed for hard drives. I fixed mine by plugging it back into my motherboard. Others have had this problem also. Maybe you guys should start your own club ![]() http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=197661 http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=197914 I think this guy had the same problem although he didn't acknowledge my post: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....69#post1558169 |
| You should look for the IDE controller. I use a NVidia motherboard. |
| Format them using dvdinfopro or imgburn, Nero is buggy.

| Thank you everyone. I have learned that its OK for my drives to be listed as SCSI. I tried formatting using DVDinfopro which seems to finish even on full format within a few seconds, and claim that no errors occured. However, Nero will still not let me write to the DVD+RW's (error formatting). JBV - I looked at the drivers again and I have the same microsoft version as for your Philips device. I really appreciate everyones advice but have not made any progress to solving the problem. steve b - unfortunately my IDE cable is already plugged directly into the motherboard (there is only one PIDE connector) so I do not have any options here. I have copied part of the Nero log where things start to go wrong in the formatting of the DVD+RW in the hope that someone may be able to decipher the information. I notice it refers to Sense key 0x05 illegal request and wonder if this significant: 7:50:44 PM #18 Phase 98 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1746 Start formatting disc before burning 7:50:44 PM #19 SPTI -1065 File SCSIPassThrough.cpp, Line 293 D: CdRom0: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1065) Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST) Sense Code: 0x20 Sense Qual: 0x00 CDB Data: 0x04 11 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Sense Area: 0x70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 20 Buffer x049ec000: Len xc 0x00 82 00 08 00 23 05 40 98 00 00 00 7:50:44 PM #20 Phase 101 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1746 Formatting disc failed 7:50:44 PM #21 Text 0 File DVDPlusRW.cpp, Line 662 Start write address at LBA 0 DVD high compatibility mode: Yes 7:50:44 PM #22 CDR -1065 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1780 Invalid command D: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182D 7:50:44 PM #23 TRANSFER -27 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1780 Could not perform start of Disc-at-once 7:50:44 PM #24 Phase 38 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1746 Burn process failed at 4x (5,540 KB/s) 7:50:44 PM #25 Text 0 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 10459 DriveLocker: UnLockVolume completed 7:50:44 PM #26 Text 0 File SCSIPassThrough.cpp, Line 583 UnLockMCN - completed sucessfully for IOCTL_STORAGE_MCN_CONTROL Thanks for the advice so far but please keep it coming! cheers |
| @greygary: that is quite useful and it looks like whichever burner you are using does not recognise the media inserted, and attempts but fails to write to it at 4x. However, it would be good if you could post the whole log file - there may be something wrong with your IDE controller installation, and we don't know which drive was responsible for this error: this information is contained elsewhere in the log. If you post the whole log file please add "[ c o d e ]" and "[ / c o d e ]" character string (but missing out all the spaces) before and after the text. This will format it in a scrollable window...

| As I mentioned in my first post, this has happened to a lot of us. In my case it was the controller. I suspect that's the problem with you too. It may be the controller hardware or maybe it's the driver. If it's the driver, there may be a fix available somewhere. I have a feeling that all or most of us with this problem have something in common. Maybe the controller. This link, which I also gave in my first post, was posted by someone with a core 2 duo. I do not have a core 2 duo, but I think you said you had one: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....05#post1592005 I was also getting the Sense Key 0x05. You can see it here in my original post: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....65#post1525465 |
| Maybe I was a bit hasty in dismissing the SCSI thing. Oh, it's fairly common to see it, but I suppose it could be a clue. I just noticed that on my other computer that doesn't have this problem the only reference to SCSI is the Nero ImageDrive, bizarrely enough. On the computer where I had your problem, the regular IDE ports were not shown as SCSI, but the troublesome Promise controller is shown as SCSI. I have no idea what this means though. |
| Hi, im new to this and I got the same problem but I dont understand all this SATA, SCSI and IDE things so if u could help me in a easy way please reply |
| SCSI or not here, it is unimportant. SCSI because SCSI command sets are used, its a history thing. Did you test with the other tools as I suggested??

| Thanks everyone. I'm not sure what to next though. Chef - I did try using dvdinfo pro on the DVD+RW's but no joy. I tried formatting on 'full' as well as quick but in each case this software claims the operation was successful even though it only took a few seconds (I epected a few minutes wait on full). The light did not even come on the dvd drives. When I tried writing to these 'formatted' discs afterwards I still get the same error message. I guess I need to look into ide contoller - JMicron |
| Just noticed that in device manager I do have: JMicron JMB36X RAID Controller version 1.6.0.1 (this is listed under SCSI and RAID controllers) When I delve deeper into driver file details it says: File version:5.0.3790.1 So I do have the dreaded controller referred to in other posts. I seem to be gaining information but not am not seeing a way forward, yet. |
| If you didn't see jby's third post, he gave a link where some people got their jmicron working. In particular, one fellow fixed the DVD+RW problem by installing the latest driver from jmicron. That's the last post on the first page here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=189057 |
