Problem:
Maxtor 300GB IDE drive in my main file server (not RAIDed) which has somehow bit the bullet and lost it's partition data. Using EasyRecoveryPro and GetDataBack show that all the files on the drive are still intact but I can't seem to re-create the partition. I'm afraid that using Windows Disk Management will destructively re-create the partition. The drive contains all of my MP3s, family photos, apps and drivers/firmware dating back almost 3 years.

Anyone have any possible solutions?

Ok here's the problem. Most if not all of these programs will happily rescue your data... to another drive. Just restoring the data in-place? That's a tough call. Off the top I can't think of a single program that will do it.

That would be useless, IMHO.

Back about 3 years ago in the msnewsgroups some scandanavian guy would come by and translate a partition table after partition magic had hosed it and they would fix the drive. The msmvp's would wait on him. Not a very user friendly field.

What would? Restoring the data without moving it off the drive?

Well again the ONLY reason to do so is when you've gooned an entire drive, or a huge portion thereof... which can't be something that happens a lot and is actually recoverable. I mean how often can the partition table actually be restored? Almost never.

That, I think, is the reason this is such a problem - that even if you could rebuild the partition intact, what are the odds of it WORKING after that? Slim. Best to just rescue the data and reformat the drive... provided it's not a duff drive!

In fact, check that first. Western Digital will cross ship replacements, that way you can rescue FROM that old dead drive TO the new one, then ship the old one back.

Yes, short version of your (longer) explanation.

Progress Update
I've tried 4 different partition recovery tools but it appears that the portion of my disk that is failing is in the partition table sectors, so the info does not keep.
I've grabbed OnTrack's Easy Recovery and am in the process of recovering all of my files in RAW mode, with extensions but no invalid and sequential filenames. This is going o be a hug hassle to rename but it's better than losing everything.

Replacement Plans
I'm ordering (4) 320GB 8MB WD SATA drives to replace the two Maxtor 300GB ATA drives in the server. They will be in RAID 10 config and should eliminate any future problems with lost data as well as improving the datastream throughput on the files. I'll continue to update this thread with my progress and thanks for all the assistance.

Don't count on EZ Recovery's RAW mode. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't know where the files begin or end.

I have had luck with other programs, but as a general rule I avoid EZ Recovery RAW. Last time I got back hundreds of megs, it was with a program called "Restorer 2000", believe it or not.

If I were you, I'll choose Partition Table Doctor . I used it for many many times, and it helps recover my lost partition and all the data.

CHENGDU YIWO Tech
I am always a little skeptical when seeing their products and the testimonials are
usually very iffy, resellers and affiliates makes me suspicious.

Sir, I don't understand how your "skeptical" occured. But, have you ever used this software? If not, please stop misleading the author. I used their products several times, and it do help me a lot. I believe it's a good idea to share good software.

Best regards.
