Hi

Hopefully this qualifies as hardware related... ;-)

I`m having trouble using a external 56k modem with a hp pavillion running the crappy win me.

Problem is that the computer does not find the modem which is connected to com1. The modem works fine on several other pc`s so it`s probably something computer related, not the modem.

I`ve tried uninstalling all printer software and other apps that might be in conflict, cleaned the registry and also tried different port settings in bios with no luck.

Any suggestions on how to make this macihne recognize the modem..?

Computer: hp pavillion 8740 running win me
Modem : Ucom Nordic wm-5614arm 56k external

Thanx

I bet your bought that at El-Giganten...
It does not show up in the device manager at all then?

Do this, boot up your computer with a start diskette and type this in DOS:
Code:
echo atm1l3x0dt12345 > com 1
(since your modem is connected do com1, if not then exchange 1 for 2)
The modem should dial 12345. To stop, type
Code:
echo ath0 > com 1
Then restart.

If the modem is not responding then your com-port is not working.

Then try this:
Quote:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then click System.
On the Device Manager tab, double-click the Ports (COM & LPT) Modem branch to expand it.

NOTE: If a communications port is not listed, your COM port has not be detected.
To install a COM port:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Add New Hardware.
Follow the instructions on your screen to detect the COM port.
On the Resources tab, click to clear the Use Automatic Settings check box.

In the Setting Based On box, click a basic configuration with settings that do not conflict with any other device.

I didn`t buy the computer, but it`s probably from Elkjop (Norwegian ElGiganten) as you guessed...

In dos, typing, echo atm113x0dt12345 > com1, the modem gives a rapid flash in two of the leds, nothing more.

The com ports are listed as they should in device manager, I`ve tried removing and reinstalling them along with configuring them to the defauls settings but nothing makes me able to recognize the modem on com1....

Thanks anyway...

well first off you need to get right drives and go into control panel and add new modem and when it says have disk use the drivers

here is the drivers

http://www.bgc.no/teknisk/drivere_ucom_5614arm.htm

i am not sure but it may have setup in there where you just have to run the setup ....

anymore questions look at signature ..

your OS is windows ME but you can use windows 98 drivers to get it working

Everything is hooked up as it should, all settings tried and are now back to default, already tried installing new hardware manually with no luck...still with the drivers installed the puter can`t find the modem...the port may be fucked even though I find it hard to believe...

well you have actually stumped me ...and i am a technician but I always hated ME ..if a computer had it we down grade to 98 or we went to XP

to check if port is messed up real quick find a serial mouse ...they are cheap these days and unplug your old mouse and plug that in com port ..if it works then port is good ...
