Today, I bought a Lite-on USB2 External DVDRW 1673SX. Whatever I do, I cannot install the drivers for this unit and my system fails to detect it.

I am running a Compaq EN Series SFF PC with a Pentium III processor running at 450MHz. The operating system is Windows 98 second edition and I have 256Mb of RAM memory.

When I connect the DVDRW to the machine, it is detected and asks for drivers. I refer it to the Nero CD which came with the unit and it proceeds to install. It then asks for the Windows 98 CD and I insert that and press OK and at that point the computer blue screens saying there is a fatal error. It repeats this every time I try to install the drivers.

When I look in Device Manager, the DVDRW is shown but it has a yellow dot beside it with an exclamation mark inside it. The DVDRW is not shown in Windows Explorer.

The blue screening seems to happen when the file ntmaphlp.pdr is loaded into the \iosubsys\ directory of Drive C:

Please, can anyone suggest a solution?

By the way, the device is supposed to work with Win 98SE and a Pentium III running at 450MHz

Sounds like an unstable Win98 installation to me. You could try to get the "latest" (as they are from 2004) drivers for the LiteOn device here: http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/.../e_drivers.asp.

If that doesn't work, you may want to try to install the drivers in Windows' safe mode. I believe Win98se can do this, although I'm not really sure (that was a long time ago).

Is your machine equiped for USB2 ? You may need a PCI add-on card to get this running right.

Yes, Dee, it can. I still have a PC with Win98 (for the sake of good old times).

What concerns the external USB drive. It maybe difficult to install. Please, do as Dee suggested, re-install the Win98 driver for the external. Restart the PC. I don't think that it will be an easy task, but can be managed, IMO.

Did you ever fix this? Yesterday I picked up one of these
and can't get it to work with my win98SE system. P3 933MHz.
I just download the latest driver and firmware from LiteOn.
I will try the new driver tonight.

The file at majorgeeks is an unsupported service pak for windows 98.
Is it safe?

The unsupported service pak for windows 98 is safe, but don't install it. As I remember, it made cosmetic changes, and would not uninstall completely.

Thank you Dee-ehn for the link to the Lite-On site.

I went to the Lite-On site without a link. With all of the global locations, I could not find the correct driver. The hardest part should have been adding the USB 2.0 card and getting the drivers to install correctly. Instead, I lost time looking for the USB driver that allows win98 to recognize the external drive.

According to the manual, the driver is included in the retail box package. But I've got news for them, it is not. There was no floppy disk, and the USB files in the folder for win98 on the Nero recording software CD were of no help.
