jerky playback in all video

Have been experiencing jerky playback in all types of video playback - DVD, youtube, etc. My computer is a DELL 4550, with two gig of memory, and the video card is a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 64MB DDR, using a NEC 4X DVD+R/RW CD-RW drive. using Windows Media Player 11, and Power DVD.Audio playback is OK. Any ideas?

Have any videos played smoothly before? If so, have you made any recent software changes or installed any new program related to multi-media? Do commercial DVD's play O.K.? Have you ever run Task Manager to see what programs/processes are running which might be using a lot of system resources? How long has it been since you defragged your hard drive? Try VLC, http://www.videolan.org/vlc/, to play your video files.

I have to agree with Whappo, your video card is pretty weak and most likely the problem. You can get a second hand card off ebay Ebay link to AGP cards, or you can get a new one from newegg for about $80 XFX HD-465X-ZPF2 Radeon HD 4650 1GB 128-bit DDR2 AGP 8X.

Most people would recommend putting that money towards a new PC. A modern $80 motherboard (with the 785G chipset) is a capable of playing all sorts of video.

Re: jerky playback in all video

I tried the VLC software, it made no difference. I read on other sites that DELL 4550 owners are having success with an EVGA 512-A8-N403-LR GeForce 6200 LE 512MB DDR2 AGP Graphics card. Not expensive, don't play games, watch a DVD now and then, just want smooth video playback. Thini this would help?

The 6200 will probably work, just don't pay over $50 all together. Here's a buy it now auction on ebay for a 9800pro Ebay link this card will definitly play dvd's without a hitch $45 free shipping. The 9800pro is probably faster than the 6200.

The auction claims the card is NEW.

Yep the 9800 PRO was a great card back in its day but it is so far outdated now

As far as a new video card, let me give you the specs of my W98se box that plays DVD's and movies from the hard drive just fine: PIII 1GHz, 512MB ram, W98se, Voodoo 2000 16MB agp video card, an old version of PowerDVD, and VLC. I would say that unless your videos are all HD, then you video card isn't the problem.

Re: jerky playback in all video

I fixed the problem. I remembered sometime ago on the DELL website, reading that switching the drive letters would cure the problem. I changed the Zip drive from E: to D:, and the NEC rom drive from D: to E:, and problem cured. I don't know how or why, maybe someone has a theory.
BTW, want benefits would I reap if I upgraded my video card?

Glad you have it sorted out. I didn't think the video card was your problem. As far as upgrading, if you don't do any gaming and you can watch your movies now, why bother? Save your money until your system no longer meets your needs. Just my two cents.
