| Firewire port not detected I have a new computer and the Firewire port is not detected in the Operating System. The device not detected is external Sony DVDRW drive. It does not show in the device manager. It works perfectly when connected via USB 2.0 but not firewire. I have an ASus MB and I checked the connections and they are all in place. I tried uninstalling the OHCI Host controller and rebooting and XP reinstalls and detects it, I am stumped. Maybe I have a bad firewire cord but I doubt it, it worked perfectly before on my old computer. Any ideas.

| Re: Firewire port not detected Is this an onboard firewire or from a card? Try with another firewire cable to rule out bad cable. Or if you still have the old computer, try the cable there.

| Re: Firewire port not detected your mobo came with an extra firewire thingy right? My asus a8n-sli premium came with a firewire port that takes up an expansion slot at the back, and you plug a red square block into the board. You could try that also for the hell of it.

this may be crazy but blow away the driver and let xp rebuild it, not sure with or without the device connected. Who knows ![]() what can it hurt. (same thing we do if this was a dma no burner in sight issue) I would try with device, let it figure it out | |

| Re: Firewire port not detected Only firewire device i have is a camcorder and the firewire connector on it is broken so I have no way of testing any firewire devices. and no i don't recall loading any other drivers. the camera just showed up when plugged in. drive letters just should not matter. you would think xp would be smart enough to follow devices around. except the c: os drive. That you can't change. |

| Re: Firewire port not detected alan1476 is correct about firewire being enabled by default on his mobo (page 4.30 manual) and windows supports firewire since ages so the XP's SP version has nothing to do with it. I'm sure firewire is there if alan got all connectors in right position, as hi says. Firewire has a fixed IRQ so there is no way to change "its" drive letter. I suggest ala1476 to first let windoze assign default drive letters on HDD's and opticals. When the system as whole is up and running you can go on with fiddling around. |

| Re: Firewire port not detected we allready talked about that. He says it's fine. Strange he hears the little boink sound you hear when a device is plugged i. Least that means xp see's or knows something happened. If the cable was hosed you would think xp would not respond at all. This is going to turn out to be some driver thing. I just think it. Shame I got 4 firewire connectors and nothing to plug into them to look at things clearer. Pinto just thinking out loud. While xp took care of firewire a while ago I wonder if firewire burners that produced drive letters were in those fixes and it's maybe sitting on some long obscure sp update |

| Re: Firewire port not detected Quote:
seems the firewire port is being detected but not functioning properly which leads me to think of a few things: 1) driver (as already mentioned) - uninstall driver manually and let winXP reinstall automatically 2) faulty firewire controller 3) faulty cable 4) try another FW device to see if it functions properly...if so, something at issue with external casing of your optical. 5) there should be a jumper on the motherboard to enable/disable that particular FW port...maybe reseat the jumper. check manual for jumper location.
