DVD burner cant see blank DVDs

My samsung TSSTcorp SH-W162C cant see my blank DVDs and keeps putting up a message saying that there is no DVD in the drive.

I'm running XP home service pack 2. Any ideas?

actually it only gives a message with nero burning rom. Explorer allows you to look at the driver even when there's no blank DVD where it should say : 'Please insert a disk into drive F:'
I'm totally baffled.

Will it detect a pressed (commercial) dvd? Have you tried a different brand of blank dvd to see if it is detected? Will it detect CD's? Have you checked DEVICE MANAGER to make sure that there are no device conflicts?

no it doesnt detect commercial DVDs.Tried 2 different brands of blanks.
No device conflicts in device manager.

Is Device Manager showing that the drive is working correctly?
If it is then the mystery deepens...take the drive out and try it on a friend's PC.
If Device manager says the drive is not functioning correctly check the master/slave settings at the rear of the drive and make sure the ribbon cable is correctly attached.

I'm disabled so taking my PC to another location might be problematic.
Just to advise other users.This drive has been nothing but trouble.Dont buy one!

I've only read opposite reports so far...

There is always the possibility to get an defective drive.

Thats good. Looks as if I dont need new hardware then? Chances are that it's my installation of XP Pro playing up.Time to reformat C: and start again.
