At present i'm using a Samsung Syncmaster 245B.
Recently the display has developed a very annoying buzz. The fault has been traced to a choke in the power supply. It could be repaired but, i've grown tired of the display, and my eyes have grown even more tired of viewing it.

    Time to upgrade.

The screen I intend to purchase is the Dell UltraSharp U2412M.
It's an IPS panel with LED backlight. I know the U2410 has a better panel with more inputs and can display more colours with greater accuracy.

I don't need the extra connections, and i'll probably connect via Displayport.
I do some picture editing, but not enough to justify the extra cost of the U2410.
Lastly, the U2412M is within my price range, and the U2410 isn't.

Any opinions on the Dell UltraSharp U2412M?

That model has just recently been reviewed in 'Computer Shopper' magazine.

Have a look here but it seems to be regarded as over priced.

It has a non-standard aspect ratio as well.

16:10 is a good thing. It will display 16:9 video perfectly well. (through a pc)

There is a very in depth review at prad.de on this monitor, and they give it a good rating: http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/revie...l#Introduction

You may have to calibrate the monitor if you are doing color critical work in photography.

The Samsung i'm using is a 16:10 display, and I like the extra work area, so I was looking to replace it with a 16:10 display.
At £311 it would have been expensive, but I can get it for £279 including shipping.

    Thanks for the links guys
Kerry, that review is very extensive, and I will of course calibrate the display.

It won't be used much for photography anyway, as i'm pretty useless with a camera.

I think I may pull the trigger on the U2412M, unless someone else can point me towards a better display at around the same price.

I really like my LG ips236v. I got it at a local store for $199. Great picture quality. Calibrated easily. No ghosting, even when playing crysis2. I think its the best monitor I have owned or seen around here. (havent seen HP ips or dell.

That's a nice looking display, but it's a 16:9 panel and I really want those extra 200 pixels vertical resolution.

    Yo Wendy-

I totally agree with the extra space on a 1920x1200 vs. a 1920x1080 - it does give one a much larger 'playing field'-eh!

The best price I could find in USA was @ Amazon for $340 shipped - which makes it competitive with the HP 24 inch S-IPS.

The advantages of the DisplayPort are awesome.

After reading Kerrys review link (and factoring for the occasional murdering of the english language) - I concur that the Dell would be a really good buy.

If that's the screen resolution you're after Dee then I don't think you can beat the Dell for picture quality.

That's a very good price too.

I had a look for you and could only equal that.

    Thanks everyone.

I reserved a U2412M online, and will pick it up from the store sometime tomorrow.

Once it's up and running, I'll report back to let everyone know what its like.

That's even better that you got it locally.

I could only match that price on Amazon.

    Excellent Dee!

Glad to hear you're so happy with it.

Monitors have come on dramatically in the last couple of years.

I have an LED backlit BenQ G2222HDL with 1920x1080 screen resolution that I've had for nearly a year now.

Nothing spectacular size wise as it's only a 22" model but the image quality is stunning.

When you spend as much time in front of them as people like us are likely to then image quality is the top priority IMO.
