I experience a strange problem after I recently changed from Windows 2000 to Windows XP (SP3).

I have no problems reading CDs in my CD drive (LITE-ON LTR-52327S) nor DVDs in my DVD drive (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7173A). Both drives have drive letters. However, I tried for a first time to record CD on Windows XP, using Nero Express, and it stops either at 13% with an error message that the Burning failed.

Interestingly enough, I have problems with the other recording software too, like Free Easy Burner and with Windows XP CD recording utility itself, giving up with different kind of errors. It seems that I got only one CD through, but I am not sure how it hapenned, because I think that I got error messages each time I tried.

I read somewhere in the Forum that I need to enable DMA, but I cannot find neither the "Primary IDE Channel" nor the "Secondary IDE channel" under IDE ATA/ATAPI controller in Device Manager, and both the CD and the DVD drive appear as SCSI CD ROM devices in the Device Manager. This surprizes me, because I think they have ATA interface - are they detected wrongly in Windows XP?

Recently I tried out software for reading ISOs, like Magic ISO and Clone..., can it be that they messed up the system and CD / DVD drive?

To keep it short - what is going on?

Regards,
Petar

Welcome to the forum

Nero 5.5? That's an old version, so the first thing I'd do is grab an upgrade to at least v6.6.x.x

Secondly, Nero is known to misreport DMA status when you're using non-M$ IDE drivers, so it might be an idea to uninstall the nVidia ones and use Windows' generic drivers.

I also wouldn't choose 52x write speed, even on Sony discs...I'd go for something like 32x for data, 16x-24x for audio. Just personal preference there, of course.

Thanks arachne for the good advice.

I removed the Nvidia IDE/ATAPI driver, and removed the CD/DVD drivers from the Device manager, and on the next restart the Primary and Secondary IDE channel suddenly appeared. No SCSI references anymore.

Now I can record CDs again, so the problem is solved...

P.
