Can't Defrag/can't run Chkdsk/f

Hi
For no apparent reason if I go to defrag I get the following message. See piccie.
If I try to run Chkdsk/f I get message 'The type of file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system starts?' Of course it doesn't happen. So no go.
I've tried system restore, again no go.

Do you find what were the process that didn't allowed you to do defrag?

Hi
In safe mode chkdsk/f ran its course & appeared to find nothing wrong. Although I had already done a system restore. So who knows.

Re: Can't Defrag/can't run Chkdsk/f

Hi

I've got a problem, too...

I've got two hard drives - my old drive 'E' and new drive 'C'. When i try to defragment the E drive,, I get a message saying " 'Disk Fragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (E" It then says "Please run Chkdsk/f." Now, whilst I can find 'Chkdsk' on my PC, I don't seem to have Chkdsk/f. Any ideas, please?

Also, whenever the PC starts it says there's a need to run Chkdsk E drive. It runs and the result seems OK. So, how do I stop this, please?

Thanks,

Re: Can't Defrag/can't run Chkdsk/f

Open cmd. make sure you are in the right drive example drive "C".
Then type chkdsk /f answer yes on the question. After the process is finished you can defrag you drive.
Remember to do this on both drives if it the same message on both drives.
I did this with my USB drive. Worked like a charm.

Re: Can't Defrag/can't run Chkdsk/f

Click "Start," "Run," type "cmd" and clikck "OK." Then type "chkdsk /f" and press "Enter." Notice there's a space between the "chkdsk" and the "/f."

Re: Can't Defrag/can't run Chkdsk/f

i have the exact same problem, but the solutions posted here don't seem to work for me. I have tried running chkdsk /f in safe mode and in normal mode, but they both say: The type of file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) i said yes to this a couple of times and on each restart it does the disk check but the problem continues. if anyone has any suggestions or solutions to this problem, please post them, i haven't been able to defrag for 2 weeks so far

mike.kobi & others.
Try another defragger, other than Windows own that is.
One of the better ones.

Another is iobit's SmartDefrag.

I downloaded and tested the UltimateDefrag FREE Edition and it looks more powerful than most other defraggers.

Within half a day it had crashed on me once while defragging.

More importantly, later my system also became unbootable, stopping with a Blue Screen of Death during boot and claiming not to be able to find some system files.

No other defragger I have tested have made my system unbootable, forcing me to restore from a system image backup.

Chances of this not being related to UltimateDefrag seem slim, although in theory it's possible that some other random event triggered the problem.

So I would urge caution in trying this defragmentation tool.

Sorry about that.
You are to my knowledge the only person to have had such problems.

Having paid for PerfectDisk2009, I do not actually use Ultimate.
Though did try that version as a demo (still had to pay for it then).

I did include the iobit SmartDefrag, as it's a bit more user friendly for those who haven't tried anything apart from Windows own.

Not saying this applies to you.
But worth a mention.

Re: Can't Defrag/can't run Chkdsk/f

Could you explain your setup a little please. Do you mean you have Windows in a 16gig partition? How big is the drive? I'm about to do a clean install and if I can partition it better I'd appreciate any advice.

Oh..I also am in the chkdsk loop, seems to always be connected with DK somehow.
