AMD64 3800+ X2 & ASROCK 939DUAL SATA - Not Booting

I got the above board and processor as an update for an old Athlon XP processor and board.

I connected everything up and it refuses to boot, never even makes it to the bios. No beeping noise, just sits there spinning away merrily to itself.

The memory, hard drive, graphics cards all work fine in the old PC so I don't think that is an issue. Got 400W power supply so it should be fine.

Anyone got any bright ideas of what might be wrong? And how to fix it?

Thx

Hmm there can be all kind of reasons why this happens. My first guess would be that your mainboards BIOS hasn't been updated yet to handle the dual core CPUs. Thing is though that you can't verify this without a single core CPU.

What does happen when you pull everything, except the CPU and the power cables from the board? Most (all?) boards should beep then, as there is no graphics card and memory installed. Maybe you can give that a try. If the system beeps, it's most likely a component problem... otherwhise I'd really expect the BIOS.

Remove everything and assemble it again, usually solves most issues.
You do know that you aren't supposed to seaten the motherboard against the metal plate directly right? (just to be safe)

As in all cases of this nature, I recommend the following solution:

- Send it to me.

Yes, that's right. Send it directly to me via US Parcel Post. I will take care of everything!

There's no mention of dual core support on this board. With many 939 boards, dual core is added via BIOS update, but again there's no mention of this for that board.

Could be the Bios. I am going to check the board with a single core chip tonight and I'll see if it works.

Thanks for the info I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything obviously wrong. And it definitely supports dual core http://www.asrock.com/support/CPU_Su...=939Dual-SATA2

Your power supply does have the 2 power connectors needed for these boards I presume. I've seen a similar problem where the 4 pin 12v connector was not on the power supply or in one case just not plugged in.

Seems to have been the board. Tried a winchester in it last night and it still didn't boot. I'll RMA it and get a new one, thanks all.

Just checking, you did try re-setting CMOS and swapping memory? Did you have the memory in the correct slots?
