It sounds as though the disc is safedisc protected which means that there will be numerous unreadable sectors in the first ~3% of the disc.

Just be patient and let the reading process complete. [Note: although it may be very slow in reading the first ~3% or so, once it has worked its way the bad sector area it will only take 2 - 3 minutes to read the remainder of the disc.]
