So I just got into the wonderful world of ripping & burning DVD's on my new PC and have been reading the boards for a while. I am using DVD decrypter to rip the files then using DVD Shrink to re-author the DVD getting rid of bonus feature and stuff to save compression.

Anyhoo so far it has worked perfectly on every DVD but one. Its a movie called "Contamination" (yes I'm into cheesy Euro-horrror) and when I'm ripping the files with DVD decrypter it keeps giving me an error in the exact same place on the exact same file. I didn't write down the error message (soory) but it was an I/O error saying it couldn't get a certain segment in the file and asked if I wanted to ignore retry or skip the file. If I say ignore it ripps a little more than gives me the same error again and again and again. If I skip the file then DVD Shrink won't complie the DVD and that file contains a major chunk of the movie anyway.

Now I chalked this up to a badly scratched up DVD but I supposedly got a replacement of the DVD but the second one I got looks suspiciously like the one I had to begin with and it errors out in the exact same place.

So my questions are: Can a scratch that would not interfere with normal playback cuase a DVD drive to not be able to read the data and does this sound like some kind of specially encrypted file or a f'ed up DVD?

Thanks everybody.

Have you tried using Shrink to rip it?

I've had a few movies cause similar problems, but usually due to a badly written or corrupt .IFO file. If you can't get the files to your HD, there's not much you can do. AnyDVD might help you do a straight copy of the files. A corrupt VOB would possibly cause problems with playback, does the original disc play alright? Maybe it's not part of the movie, but some of the extras?

Well I didn't watch the movie but I skipped through all the chapters and they all started playing ok. When I skipped that file during the decrpytion and tried playing it off the HD I ended up mising chapters every chapter after 9 of the main movie so...I guess I'll just have to break down and buy this one.

A friend of mine just handed me Finding Nemo. He was concerned about how badly scratched it had gotten on the bottom of the disc and wanted to me to attempt to recover the movie. Well, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink both failed. Finally, I left it sit overnight with DVD Decrypter set to ignore read errors and it spit the movie out. I tried Nero Recode 2 first to see if it would go through the encoding phase but it failed, miserably and couldn't continue.

I then tried DVD Shrink and it went through and burned. The only problem with the backup was there were 2-3 spots on the movie that skipped for a second or two. Nothing to worry about really. Now he wants me to do Monsters Inc since his kid had dropped it on the floor and it skips in certain points as well *sigh*. Anyway, give Decrypter another go and leave it skip read errors. If it gets a CIRC Error don't worry about it - each one is only 2kb in size. Finding Nemo had 432 read errors from Decrypter when it was all said and done and I did Main Movie only so to not cause as many problems as possible.

I'm finding everyday more and more just how truely amazing DVD Shrink really is.
