Bittorrent tests new revenue stream - tries to spread Realplayer

Today Bittorrent announced that it will test a new way of generating revenue benefiting themselves and artists, unfortunately by spreading the controversial Realplayer. In a blog on their website, Bittorrent CEO Erik Klinker posted that the company is trying "a new idea that could revolutionize the content business".  The idea is to release content of artists to the Bittorrent network for free and to generate revenue by including a software offer from a partner. Bittorrent and the artist get paid once the software is downloaded too.

The bundle contains exclusive video, artwork and tracks from DJ Shadow’s new project Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era (1992-1996) which you can download for free and if you don't opt out, Realplayer. When you want to download the bundle (97.7 MB, including  a Realplayer install file), you can fortunately opt-out by selecting the "Just gimme the files" option, but that will likely be missed by many. We didn't dare to check if RealPlayer is a terrible as it used to be.

Bittorrent also reports on their blog that more experiments will follow, we can't wait to see what other software companies will pop up.
