This is a step-by-step guide to using DVD2SVCD in DVD2DVD mode to backup the main movie of a DVD, producing high quality output.

    The following are needed:

DVD2SVCD (the version featured in this guide is 1.2.1 build 2a)
Cinema Craft Encoder SP 2.50 (TMPGEnc or Canopus ProCoder can be used as well, but this guide won't cover them)
Sonic Scenarist 2.6 or 2.7
Nero Burning Rom (other DVD burning programs can be used)
At least 30GB of free hard-drive space
At least 6-8+ hours of time, depending on CPU speed
INSTRUCTIONS:

    1) After installing all of the software, start up DVD2SVCD, go to the Misc tab, make sure "Input file type" is DVD, change "Output file type" to DVD, and check "Don't delete any files." If you wish to use your computer while backing up the DVD, change "Process priority for all used programs" to Idle.

    2) On the DVD Rip tab, check "Activate DVD ripping" and choose "Use Internal routines." If you wish to save the ripped files to a different directory each time you rip a DVD, check "Select new default folder when ripping starts." Otherwise, choose a default folder for "Rip to folder."

    3) On the Audio tab, check "Do not convert audio (use source audio)" and set your language priority to whatever you want for both audio streams. If you only want one audio stream, don't check "Audio 2 Priority 1."

    4) On the Encoder Tab, choose Cinema Craft Encoder, and browse to where you have it installed if it isn't filled in for you already and find <cctsp.exe>. "Save in Folder" is where all of the CCE output files will be stored. For the highest quality, choose "Multipass VBR" and set the "Number of passes" to at least 3. I prefer to use 4 passes myself. More passes result in higher quality video; however, each pass will require additional encoding time (number of passes = number of times the encoder will run through the movie), and there probably won't be a noticeable improvement in quality above 4 passes.

    5) On the CD Image tab, choose Sonic Scenarist, and browse to where you have it installed if it isn't filled in for you already and find <scenarist.exe>. The field where I have "D:\DVD\" is where your Scenarist files will be saved.

    6) With your DVD in the drive, go to the Conversion tab and click on the disc icon. DVD2SVCD will locate the longest movie on the DVD and display its information, including all of its available audio streams and their language, mode, and number of channels. Note that on a few DVDs, the longest movie might not the be main film, so check it out – any program that can preview the selected movie would be good for this. If the wrong video is chosen, select another one in the "Movie Length" pulldown, which will list the lengths of all video streams. Choose your first audio stream by changing its Audio index to 1. If you wish to add a second stream, change its Audio index to 2. When you're done making your audio selections, click the green check mark, and choose "Rip and convert." If you chose "Select new default folder when ripping starts" on the DVD Rip tab, you will be asked to select a folder to store the ripped files. After one more confirmation, the entire process will begin.

    7) When DVD2SVCD is done (it'll say "Conversion done!" in the Log), start up Nero and open a new DVD-Video compilation. Browse to where your encoded files are stored and find the \DVD-Image\VIDEO_TS\ folder, where you'll find several .IFO, .BUP and .VOB files. Drag these files into the \VIDEO_TS\ folder of your DVD-Video layout, change the compilation's volume label to anything you want, burn the DVD, and you're done!

There are many options in DVD2SVCD that I didn't cover in this guide; however, this guide only covers what is necessary to create the DVD.

Got some questions? Then post here.
