External Burners with CloneDVD

When I first used CloneDVD (probably v1 days), I was testing it on an External DVD Burner (HP i300 or e300). I didn't have any luck at that point. I did read that those were not good dvd burners.

I have a family member who just got a laptop and mentioned he'll want a DVD burner.

Anyone here use an external DVD burner with CloneDVD and have good results? What brand?

The Liteon external burners have been fairly good. Make sure they have USB 2, some still have 1.1.

@ Pakratus,

Are you sure you want an External DVD Burner for a laptop? Internal Laptop DVD Burners are generally cheaper in price than an External DVD Burner and Internal DVD Burners generally perform better that External DVD Burners. Your previous experience shows that an External DVD Burner can prove to be problematic. Also an External DVD Burner is another piece of equipment that you need to lug around.

Below is a Web Link for NewEgg Internal SlimLine DVD Burners ->

Re: External Burners with CloneDVD

I have two externals and love them both (Sony 810UL and a Plextor 750 UF). I use AnyDVD, CloneDVD and Nero Premium. While I do not have them operating on a laptop, they work beautifully on my desktop using XP Home.

Re: External Burners with CloneDVD

"Generally better" is quite a subjective term...Has little meaning if you are successful with your equipment and are satisified with its performance, i.e., making enjoyable, playable backups....

Re: External Burners with CloneDVD

I use both my internal laptop burner and just made an external LiteOn burner by putting it in a firewire case. The reason I did that is cause my original internal burner bit the dust...probably due to extreme use. (During the regular tv viewing season I burn shows for a friend here at work so I'm burning probably 5 or 6 dvd's a week for them) Now if my external burner dies I can replace it with a cheaper desktop model (32 bucks for the LiteOn I just got vs the 65 I paid for the NEC laptop drive). Just something to consider. If you're not doing a lot of burning, then the internal option is definitely the way to go.

Thank you everyone. I will consider all of your responses.

Those with external burners- Do you still use the internal DVD drive (if you have one) to read the movie?

Re: External Burners with CloneDVD

on my old set up I used an external Sony 710-UL on firewire for both ripping and burning. I also used an external harddrive (a 250gig maxtor one-touch) to use as temp storage also on firewire - it was faster than my laptops internal harddrive!!
