Dual-Layer DVD Copying (Please help this n00b)

| OK. I recently purchased the NEC 2510A. I know this drive supports Dual Layer burning, but I am not really sure what the difference is between Dual Layer & 'standard' DVDs. My questions are: 1. What is the difference? 2. Can a Dual Layer DVD be burned onto a 'standard' DVD-R, or must I use Dual Layer media? 3. If so, can it be done using the CloneDVD / AnyDVD combo? Thanks for your time.

| 1. Yes your NEC can burn to DL dvd's. A "standard dvdr" as you call it is single sided single layered. All dvdr blanks have been that way untill just recently where the DL media is single sided but has 2 layers for almost double the storage capacity. 2. The only way to get 8gb of movie on a DL dvd to fit to a std dvdr is to compress it. Or you could just use those VERY expensive (well for now they are) DL media. 3. CloneDVD/AnyDVD is one of many software solutions that can do this compression for you. DVD Shrink is another.

| By reading many threads I've noticed there are now movies on DVD9 disks. But my question is: had they been on the market before recordable DVD9 disks were available for the public ? Or they entered the market with DVD-ROM DL ? If not, well this means that almost all DVD players are able to read double layer disks  |

| Movie have been on DVD9 pressed media ever since they first appeared some years ago, nothing new there. Thats why programs like Shrink, DVD2One, etc exist to compress the dvd9 down to dvd5 size. All DVD Players can play pressed manufactured DVD9's, that doesnt automatically make them able to read DVD+R DL media.
