Does dvd shrink actually shrink files ???

DVD Shrink 3.2015. I put in a 6 GB disc, not encrypted. I selected full disc. I started the process, it took about 1:30 Hrs to complete. When complete it started the burn process using Nero 6.3111, it spoilt my disc (Unspecified target error lite-On DVD-+RW SOHW 832S VS0E). But that's not the issue. When I compared the files shurnk to my HDD, I see two of the .VOB files mising & the the others are the same size as on the original DVD. So my question is does DVD shrink really 'shrink' the DVD??? Should I try another version of dvd shrink?

Backup shrinks your files. Full Disk is like for using a DL disk.

Re: Does dvd shrink actually shrink files ???

dvdshrink does "shrink" the dvd. .vobs are basically many clips of video put together into 1gb chunks. when these clips are compressed, they'll no longer add up to 1gb files if the clips are left in their original groupings, so new .vobs have to be created that will total up to 1gb each (except for the last .vob in each vts, which might be less than 1gb). as a result, there will typically be fewer .vobs after compressing.

Not on Full Disk. Full Disk is a 1:1 copy. All menus, etc are copied. Used for Double Layer disks. If you choose Backup then the VOBs are compressed so they will fit on a standard DVD Disk and you have the option to leave certain things out.

Re: Does dvd shrink actually shrink files ???

i know how dvdshrink works, and what you said isn't related at all to what i said. also, "full disc" and "backup" aren't separate modes. you ALWAYS have to choose "backup" when you want to start the ripping/compressing, even if you want to copy the full disc uncompressed.

Re: Does dvd shrink actually shrink files ???

Just to further clarify what jake8131 said, "Full Disc" & "Re-Author" are both used for shrinking - what determines whether it is shrunk or left uncompressed is the drop-down box on the right in the "Compression Settings" tab. If you leave it to "Automatic", it will apply the level of compression needed to shrink the disk to the specified output size set in the program's preferences ("Edit" --> "Preferences").

So "Full Disc" is nothing to do with whether it's a 1:1 copy, it just makes an output which includes all of the disc's contents, as opposed to "Re-Author", which allows you to select which titles to include in your output.
