The Japanese electronics giant announced that its plasma TV division is no longer able to compete with cheaper LCD TVs. The company is in heavy competition with South Korean competitors Samsung and LG. Together the three largest Japanese TV manufacturers Sony, Sharp and Panasonic have a market share of less than 20% of all TVs sold. Panasonic lost the last fiscal year almost  YPN 88 billion ($900 million) on its TV business.

Plasma TVs are considered to have a better contrast ratio, better color accuracy, wider viewing angles and better motion tracking than LCD TVs. However they are not as bright as LCD TVs, are more susceptible to glare, more susceptible to burn-ins of static images, consume more energy and can be problematic when used on high altitudes.

Panasonic was the company that created the largest plasma display ever, they showcased it at CES 2008 in Las Vegas and the display measured 150 inch.
