What DVD burner for my linux distro (suse 10.1)

Hi All,

This is my first post. I'm wanting to get an internal CD / DVD burner for my desktop, AMD XP2000+ / 750MB DDR1 I use linux, opensuse 10.1, kernel rev = 2.6.16.13-4. I have found SUSE's DVD hardware compatibility list, but none of the listed models are for sale locally, whilst I understand there are real hardware compatibility issues with DVD burners and linux?

Some models I can easily find locally are:

Lite On LH-20-AIP186C
Samsung SH-S182FRSBN
LG GSA-H55N

I saw a thread here about Samsung SH-S182FRSBN / Some Sony model. Are they the same part? Is it true all sony products are good to go with linux?

Anyway, if anyone can advise if the above models will autodetect and work on my distro, I'd be grateful. Any general advice re: this purchase also hugely appreciated. Or will I need to up the kernel?

Any burner should autodetect and work for you out of the box. Personally I'd go for a SATA model (Serial ATA), but looking at your Athlon I don't suppose your mobo came with SATA connectors. Any of the PATA/IDE models you'll find these days will be okay too.

Yes, the Samsung 182 and Sony 830 are twins but I've never heard about all Sony products working with Linux... You may want to consider an update to SUSE 10.2 though, as 10.1 has some issues.
