Thanks for the info Sen. 5:52 for 12x P-CAV is extremely fast, faster than most 16x CAV writers even. This means that the drive reaches 12x speed very early, which could lead to burning quality issues, depending on the media. On the other hand, limiting the speed to 12x makes a lot of sense, since most media, including certified 16x media, has lower quality at the end of the disc (due to the production process; it's not easy to control the temperatures so effectively that the quality of the disc remains constant from the first to the last sectors), exactly where the highest speeds are reached in 16x CAV writing mode.

Very interesting drive.

So Toshiba-Samsung drives really uses P-CAV for 16x DVD+R too? Because if it would continue with CAV until it reaches 16x using the same RPM as in the graph above it should hit 16x about the 3.5-4 GB mark. That should easily make it the fastest DVD writer to date. If it only had supported bitsetting too...

No, it's a 12x writer. 16x P-CAV won't happen, the RPMs would be way too high to control.

Edit: Sorry, I now understand what you mean. You are speculating about a 16x P-CAV drive based on the 12x P-CAV transfer graph. I think that Toshiba limited the speed to 12x on purpose though (quality issues of the media, as explained above). They just speeded up the drive a bit so it is not slower than the 16x CAV writers of the competition (they could have added 16x CAV writing mode also, of course).

It's 12x for DVD-R but 16x for DVD+R, check the specs. The RPM won't be higher, it would only keep the same RPM longer.

BTW maybe it supports bitsetting after all? From the Babelfish translation: "The media type of DVD+R DVD-ROM is the type which is written in order to raise compatibility."

The original toshiba specs are 12x -R and 16x +R, but the specs of the Buffalo DVM-RD12FB whitch is the review drive are 12x for + and - R.

Huh? In 16x CAV mode, the RPM stays constant until the end of the disc. Here is a comparison between a 16x CAV burn and the Toshiba 12x P-CAV burn (both took 5:52):

BenQ 16x CAV:

Toshiba 12x P-CAV:

As you can see, the RPM is not higher indeed, both around ~9000 rpm max. The BenQ drive keeps the RPM until the end of the disc, while the Toshiba drive slows down after reaching 12x max. speed. So in principle, the 16x CAV drive should be faster. But since both burns take exactly the same time, the only conclusion is that the Toshiba drive is faster at writing lead-in and lead-out.

Another conclusion: If the Toshiba drive uses the same max. RPM for writing DVD+R at 16x speed (very likely), it won't write in 16x P-CAV mode, but "normal" 16x CAV just like all the other drives. But it may still be the fastest drive because it seems to handle lead-in and lead-out faster than the competition.

packetloss: Yeah sorry you're right. I guess I got a little confused by the wide resolution of the Toshiba CD-speed graph in combination with having the picture of Plextor's 12x PCAV graph in my mind (which uses a lower RPM that I now realize could never reach 16x)

As I expected (posting #8), this drive is the fastest burner at 16x CAV also. It must handle lead-in and lead-out faster than other drives, since the max. RPM isn't higher than the BenQ drive (and other 16x CAV writers). The WOPC looks very similar to that of the NEC ND-3500A.

Again, very interesting drive indeed. The drive is available here in Germany btw. (click). The lowest price for the bulk version is 72.55 EUR atm., the retail version costs 10 EUR more (not in stock yet). This is a little more than the NEC ND-3500A (64.40 EUR min. for the bulk version), and about the same as the BenQ 1620 (68.50 EUR min. bulk) or Pioneer 108 (76.99 EUR min.).

Seems great!

The opposite to the Samsung TS-H552B which uses a Mediatek chipset.

The TS-H552A uses a toshiba chipset, right?

A very good question! Newegg has the Toshiba TS-H552A in stock for $83 plus $4 shipping, and they have the Samsung TS-H552B in stock for $63 plus $4 shipping, $20 less.

Anyone know anything about the Samsung?

A and B mean a lot of different things. H552A uses Mediatek chipset like Lite-On SOHW-1213S/1613S/1633S/1653S. H552B uses Toshiba chipset like Toshiba SD-R5272 and SD-R5372. Some of the followings are my guesses from observations

TSST is a company of 2 billion USD revenue created by Samsung Electronics OMS division and Toshiba SDD division. TSST is consisted of two "branch" companies actually, TSST Korea based in Suwon, South Korea, and TSST Japan based in Tokyo, Japan. TS-H542A and TS-H552B are marketed by TSST Korea and usually branded as Samsung. TS-H552A are marketd by Toshiba and usually branded as Toshiba. There have been a lot of Samsung TS-H552B and TS-H542A in South Korea while there are TS-H552A and SD-R5372 in Japan. TS-H552A and SD-R5372 are not available in South Korea, not even to me. I have no memory of TS-H542A and TS-H552B sold in Japan.

I can only imagine that Toshiba doesn't trust Samsung Electronics completely and gave Samsung only a very inferior model because Samsung wanted a 16x DVD writer release before LG Electronics, Samsung's only competitor in a market Samsung wants to be No. 1 in everything from credit card to semiconductors. LG actually lost both businesses in addition to some others mainly to Samsung, almost. Sony and Lite-On IT must have some kind of similar disharmony. Marriage between companies do not always create synergy. However, I feel it will be a great success after all.

I have questioned and suggested a few things to Samsung OMS and TSST Korea for a while and will get some responses soon with any luck.

552B = mediatek (I know for sure as I've opened mine)
552A = Toshiba? Don't know as I've never had one.

I got it right but my typing hand was confused. Typo.

In Japan, TS-H552B has just started appearing on the Akihabara shop shelves for about US$70. In South Korea, it's been two months and now the price is under 100,000 Won for the first time which is about the same as LG back-imported GSA-4160B.
